One of Jesu's best and heaviest releases

Finally a re-issue of this EP is out. Heartache has been a highly sought after release by Jesu, because it's one of the first releases, and not to mention one of Jesu's best. Both of Heartache's songs blend industrial, drone, and post-metal perfectly. Both songs are about 20 minutes long, and they build up so well. This EP is both heavy sounding and emotionally. The music is absolutely pulverizing, it's right next to Godflesh's stuff, and the atmosphere Justin Broadrick creats with the guitar and electronics/programming are so beautiful sounding. I was pretty stoked to hear the Dethroned EP, and well, I was beyond pleased when I first listen to those tracks. They sound pretty raw, which I love, but their full of that shoegaze/post sound too. So if you are a fan of Jesu and Godflesh, you really need to check out this release.
5 stars for one disc 4 for the other...

Heartache I previously reviewed for Amazon.uk. My thoughts on it haven't changed. It's still strikes me as a heavy record that is emotional as well as visceral. Dethroned, in some ways is in a similar vein. However- to spite it's more concise songwriting approach it lacks in the big picture as far as production. The tunes themselves while good, could benefit from a remix. I know mixing vocals down to almost non-existant is nothing really new for Broadrick. But C'mon man! It's too f'n quiet man! For the actual tunes on Dethroned: those that might be put off by Broadrick's melodic &/or harmonic tendencies will love this. It's definitely geared for the older Jesu fan (Self titled and Heartache) and Godflesh than anyone else. Heavy guitars? Definitely! Heaviest record of Jesu's career? Close. Jesu fans these days tend to be very polarized as another reviewer pointed out. I'm in the camp that thinks the more Jesu the better! Even if it's not my cup of tea! Luckily for me- this is! ****1/2 stars.
