Product Description

Caught between love and duty, can she make an impossible choice?

Five years ago, Aera was called away from everything she had ever known: her home, family, and Coram, the boy she was growing to love. She was given no choice. As the only living lava-shifter—able to transform her body into molten rock—she is destined to serve the volcano god as his fire priestess. Now, before she takes her ordained role, she must face her final test. Execute a criminal sentenced to death for the most unforgivable of all sins. Blasphemy.

She's shocked to discover it's no anonymous law-breaker waiting chained at the center of the labyrinth. It's Coram. For the crime of being a gargoyle, a winged stone-shifter. A gift akin to hers…except his gift is unsanctioned by the temple, his powers proclaimed unholy.

If she refuses the test she will betray her god and condemn her family to dishonor. To pass it she must kill the boy she used to love...the man she still does.

Warning: Contains violence, tears, self-sacrifice, a little bit of I-can't-bear-to-leave-you-but-I-have-to sex, and a heroine whose touch melts the hero—um, literally.

An introspective society that worships the God of the volcano, where service to the god brings honour, and disgrace follows families that fail in their reverence, forms the backdrop to the initiation rite of Aera as priestess. This is a story about the positives and negatives about being different and how two people come to terms with their gift/curse and the problems it can bring.

The story rockets along, at the pace of an erupting volcano! It left me wanting more. More detail about the society in which Aera and Coram were brought up, more about the Volcano cult, more about Aera's family. Having said that, I felt the story was balanced, the emotions believable, enough description to paint a picture in your mind but faint enough so that each reader will be able to make their own landscape and labyrinth and their own idea of what the shape shifted Coram looks like. How they escape their fate ( if indeed they do ) seems to happen so fast but again leaves many questions unanswered. Perhaps the next book will reveal more.

I look forward to reading the sequel.

Enchanting Fantasy 16 Mar 2011

Heart of the Volcano was a lovely fantasy, reminding me very much of Marion Zimmer Bradley's style in Mists of Avalon. Although not as wide in scope as that book, I found it a strangely enchanting, poignant read. I loved the hero, Coram, and thought his relationship with the heroine warm and his love for her timeless. I loved the fact that he changed into a gargoyle, I thought that was a really nice twist on the shapeshifter theme. Heart of the Volcano is a gentle, touching read. Highly recommended.

Heart of the Volcano is a poignant story filled with unusual magic, controlling priests and characters with very unhuman gifts poised in battle against their very human fears and desires. I was totally captivated by Imogen Howson's world and the way she slowly brings Aera and Coram back together. She does an excellent job of revealing the differences between the various powers her characters have over stone and fire, and how their lives are wholly ruled by the priests charged with ensuring the volcano god's rule remains supreme and unchallenged.

I highly recommend Heart of the Volcano, and I look forward to reading more by Imogen Howson very soon. - Kathryn
