RITA winner for Best Historical Romance

NO HEART EVER BEAT SO NOBLE—NOR SO STRONG

Britain, 1351. After an arduous exile to flee the darkness and danger sweeping her lands, Lady Elizabeth D’Auvers returns home to Woodell Castle, yearning only for her looms and her quiet life. To her astonishment, she finds the castle and farmlands thriving, thanks to Lord Thomas of Roxburgh, a knight errant whose size and strength offer protection to Elizabeth’s castle and its people.

Lord Thomas’s warm gaze makes Elizabeth’s flesh burn with unaccustomed fire, and her defenses crumble, leaving her heart as vulnerable as her trembling body. Yet chilling thoughts trouble her mind. For there is something dark and mysterious about this man—a secret that makes him as forbidden to desire as he is impossible to resist.

From Romantic Times magazine:

"This realistic portrait of medieval life looks deeply into what makes a man worthy of the title of knight. When Lyssa discovers Thomas' ruse, she nearly loses the man she loves and respects. Not until he proves his mettle do all realize it is within a man's grasp to become a knight no matter his station in life when what he fights for is worthy.

Ms. Samuel weaves a tale worthy of one of Lyssa's tapestries. Not only does she write of love between men and women, but of the powerful friendships between the women and a man's need to be free and respected. This is a powerful, stirring medieval romance.

MEDIEVAL ROMANCE 9 Sep 2011
By L. Sims TOP 100 REVIEWER

Lady Elizabeth is returning to her keep, after being forced into leaving because of the plague. She returns with her two stepchildren. Guards had been left to care for the keep and village, but they had run off. Elizabeth finds that a strange Knight has been overseeing the keep, lands and peasants. Lord Thomas greets Elizabeth on her return and is stunned by the beautiful woman standing before him, he had expected an older woman. But Elizabeth is only twenty years old and already a widow, a state she hopes to keep. Unless her cousin the King decides otherwise. She feels attracted to this tall dark Kinight, but there is something about him that is puzzling. As Thomas and Elizabeth become closer they encounter many problems not least Thomas's secret, and jealousy from the other women even her sixteen year old stepdaughter.
The plot is fairly predictable, but then what romance isn't. The book is well written, Thomas and Elizabeth are both very likeable their relationship is sensual and passionate, the side characters and the sub plots are well defined. All in all a pleasant read.

I had never read Barbara Samuel before and was seduced by the fact this book was being offered free on Kindle. I am so very glad I did.

The plot is very simple: Set in Medieval England, a noble lady of royal blood falls in love with a man of no aristocratic standing or any notable heritage at all. In fact, he's as base as can be but with huge ambition to improve himself. The story depicts their attraction blossoming into love and their plight to stay together amid the calls of duty, prejudice and the limiting laws of the time. Rather than inserting needless twists and turns of plot, or drama and suspense, Samuel has penned a very simple love story, keeping the focus firmly on developing a deep relationship between the central characters which results in a simply told but deeply romantic story.

Although the happy ending in this book is highly unlikely to have been mirrored by the experiences of our ancestors in 14th Century England, what makes the book an absolute winner is the author's writing style. Its simply lyrical, flavoured with the speaking style of medieval England but without jarring or interfering with the flow of the story. The characters are well defined, aimiable and highly credible. I enjoyed it immensely and found myself fully invested in Lyssa and Thomas' story very quickly upon starting to read the book and then mourned their loss once I'd read the final page! Couldn't put it down. Highly recommemded.

Corny
The story line and dialogue were just too corny for me. Having said that, I did stick it out to the end.
