This is a master piece .. The trilogy is one of the great literary English works of the 20th century. It is big , broad ,comic, beautiful at times heroic , sad , inspiring, very human . Masters characters are beautifully drawn . The first 80 to 100 pages are a little difficult but after that it takes off . A master piece , it should be up there eith War and peace a trilogy of a genius .

Part of the best fictional account of the First World War ever written. Best read alongside 'Now God be Thanked' and 'In The Green of The Spring.' Marvellous read!

I know it's old fashioned writing but by god you can't beat John Masters for a good yarn. His first world War stuff is particularly evocative.
