Product Description

A major new voice in young women’s fiction: an infectious and brilliantly funny debut.

It's official. Angela Clarke is in love – with the most
fabulous city in the world.

Fleeing her cheating boyfriend and clutching little more than a crumpled bridesmaid dress, a pair of Louboutins and her passport, Angela jumps on a plane, destination - NYC.

Holed up in a cute hotel room, Angela gets a New York makeover from her NBFJenny and a whirlwind tour of the city that never sleeps. Before she knows it, Angela is dating two sexy guys. And, best of all, she gets to write about it in her new blog (Carrie Bradshaw eat your heart out). But it's one thing telling readers about your romantic dilemmas, it's another figuring them out for yourself …

Angela has fallen head over heels for the big apple, but does she heart New York more than home?

Witless, contrived read 23 April 2011
By lanvin
Format:Paperback
I feel like anyone could write chick-lit but I have discovered that witty, enjoyable, truly entertaing chick-lit is hard to come by. The story is so contrived and you really have to suspend belief. I know people read novels to escape and things are always embellished but this is even more unrealistic than some fantasy novels. The main character is not at all likable and the plot devices throughout are painfully cliche. After I had finished, I was actually surprised that it had gotten published because the calibre of books it's competing with is high and not only that...but there is a series of these books(WHY?)

SPOILERS : the protagonist, on a two second whim, flies off to New York and books herself into a 5 star all on discovering her partner is cheating. Instead of facing her problems and issues (and delusions), she decides that staying in New York is the right thing to do (her thought process and decision making is ridiculous). By the way, she is a blogger. That is her job. She somehow, magically, lands a fantastic job writing a blog for a top fashion magazine (why is the new job ALWAYS fashion related in these contrived chick-lits, even when the heroine never had a career in fashion to start with?)
She blogs about truly inane things and there is no way someone would get PAID to write what she does as she's woefully unwitty (or, should I say, the author is). So, she's living in New York now, working in fashion and carrying her Marc Jacobs bag (the bag is clearly the true main character of the story, getting mentioned every other page) and goes through a series of boring dates with stereotypical, one-dimensional men as she tries to get over her ex (because true self-worth and the measure of her happiness is to be found in sleeping around with men that are clearly idiots, apparantly) - There's the banker, the musican... Sigh. Who ever will she choose? That's about the extent of the books plot. Add in her new New York friends (equally as insipid as her) and you have the formula for a mundane, frankly stupid chick-lit.

This is a terrible book. It's currently being given away free on the cover of Glamour; I can only assume they got a job lot for free. I was on a delayed train so it was better than having nothing to read, but not by much.

It reads like the worst kind of lazy, repetitive "You go, girl!" article in a cheap magazine. It's full of cliches; "as far as humanly possible", the friend who eats constantly but never puts on weight, the 'Pretty Woman' style makeover etc etc. It reads as if it were written by a 16 year old. There's no wit, no humour and little plot; like most poor efforts in this genre it concentrates on listing the designers of the clothes the heroine buys and the shops she visits. Presumably it's meant to be empowering and appeal to readers who feel wronged and under-appreciated. You too can run away, become instant bosom buddies with somebody you meet the same day, have a makeover and become gorgeous, shop at Marc Jacobs and have handsome rock stars and bankers accosting you for dates!

The stupidest bit of the story is the heroine's shock when the two men she's been "dating" (under the most ludicrous and unconvincing circumstances) tell her they know that she's been seeing both of them at once. The reader can see this coming a mile off. The culmination is a tearful scene in an art gallery which is so mawkish and badly-executed that I couldn't finish the book.

I hear the author has written two more in the same series. God help us all.

I purchased this book mainly based on the cover and title, having not previously heard of this author. I was really surprised that when I started to read the book that it lived up to its cover and title. It has made me want to travel to New York! The book was fast paced and easy to read! Cannot wait to read the next one!!
