Product Description

Product Description

Vocalist Jackie Ryan's newest release reflecting the full spectrum of what jazz singing means today. With repertoire from bolero to ballads, samba to swing, gospel to jazz standards to original compositions, It shows an incredibly versatile vocalist and gifted lyricist in a class all her own.

Jackie's rich, appealing alto voice has brought her increasing international acclaim. She has performed regularly for the past 5 years at Ronnie Scott's and jazz critic Jack Massarik (Evening Standard) said that "she is one of the best singers to sing at Ronnie's since Shirley Horn". She has also recorded with jazz greats Buddy DeFranco, Terry Gibbs and the legendary trumpet-master Clark Terry.

Jackie's Mexican-Irish heritage lends an authentic treatment and deep intimacy to the Latin selections included here. And as a lyricist, she has a keen ear for phrasing and internal rhymes, writing the hauntingly poetic lines found on CD's "Seasons of The Heart".

Jackie is backed by three different bands featuring jazz masters, such as Cannonball Adderley drummer Roy McCurdy, bebop pianist Jon Mayer, Duke Ellington trumpeter Allen Smith, and Sarah Vaughan drummer Omar Clay. They are joined by two special guests, both international stars themselves, saxophonist Ernie Watts and harmonica player Toots Thielemans.

Personnel: Jackie Ryan - vocals, Ernie Watts - saxophones, Toots Thielemans - harmonica, Jon Mayer - piano, John Wiitala - bass, Omar Clay - drums, Roy McCurdy - drums, Steve Erquiaga - guitar, Barry Zweig - guitar, Bart Plateau - flute, Allen Smith - trumpet, and others

5.0 out of 5 stars You Gotta Get This One! 26 Jan 2004
By Rick Cornell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Man, is this a good album! Best vocal jazz album of 2003, that's for sure. Listen to how Ms. Ryan covers "Lover Come Back to Me": she starts about mp on about a middle C, and ends the song ff, about 2 octaves up. Jackie Ryan is one of the few jazz singers around who could have made a career in opera, if she had wanted. As it is, she probably has the richest voice of all jazz singers. But the way she uses her voice is even more impressive. Listen to how she whispers "Estate" (Jon Hendricks "In Summer"), then belts "Jump for Joy" in a manner that would have made Mahalia Jackson proud. If you've read this far, then get to your mouse and buy this immediately. This is just tremendous.
