Product Description

For over two decades, HEART & HANDS has been a beloved guide for both midwives and parents interested in the benefits of midwifery care. This all-new fourth edition has been revised from start to finish, featuring updated material that emphasizes independent midwifery, physiologic (natural) birth, and the art of nonintervention. Midwifery expert Elizabeth Davis includes valuable hints for turning breech and posterior babies, mediating pain in labor, and supporting newborn physiology. Davis also reveals the keys to postpartum recovery, with practical tips on breastfeeding for busy mothers. Comprehensive and compassionate, HEART & HANDS remains a dog-eared classic for parents, midwives, and other birthing helpers.Thoroughly revised and updated fourth edition of the classic text for midwives, also useful for expecting parents, nurses, childbirth educators, doulas, and other labor helpers.Features new diagrams and photographs, updated midwifery forms, and an expanded resource list for parents.Expanded sections on GBS, VBAC, gestational diabetes, and water birth address current controversies.Previous editions have sold more than 150,000 copies. "An impressive and deeply caring book . . . reveals a shrewd and compassionate sensitivity to women'¬?s needs in pregnancy and childbirth." -Sheila Kitzinger, author of The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Birth

I am a midwifery student in New Zealand and Heart and Hands was one of the books that first confirmed my desire to be a midwife. Later on as I persue my studies, Heart and Hands is an inspirational book that keeps me focused on my original motives for studying midwifery, not the medical delivering of babies, but the emotional and spiritual journey that women make when they give birth. However, this isn't a lovey dovey book, it has hard factual information and evidence and wonderful pictures. I recommend this book not only as a guide for midwives but a helpful text for parents to be.

I am currently a Student Nurse Midwife in Rural Virginia and I have found that this book is noteworthy of being mandatory for anyone aspiring to become a Midwife. Elizabeth Davis is inviting in her focus of providing Midwifery Care. She is elaborate in her explanations and the drawing and photographs are priceless. I also work in a hospital setting as an R.N. and I am amazed that the OB/GYN's I work with are interested in the beauty of this book. Not only has this book made a lasting impression on me, but also the OB/GYN's that certainly need a taste of Midwifery in their practice. May I recommend that even any woman contemplating the use of a Midwife choose this book as a guide for her pregnancy- your choice in health care provider will be simply made after reading this book. Blessings to Elizabeth Davis for such an inspirational addition to the field of Midwfery!

I'm not a midwife, but I wanted lots of information about childbrith before the birth of my first baby. This was our favorite book about childbirth: the information was specific, the drawings were clear and beautiful, and the whole book was encouraging.
