Product Description

Lila Jane is an exclusive call-girl based in a high-tech suburb of Seattle. She receives an anonymous email from a blackmailer who threatens to kill her if she doesn't do exactly what he says.

She hires private investigator Rudy Sherman – who’s a sucker for a damsel in distress – to identify the blackmailer. Lila suspects a rival of sabotaging her business, but as Rudy’s investigation descends into the strange underworld of Internet prostitution, he turns up a host of suspects.

His task is complicated by escorts and johns who are reluctant to talk. Even Lila is keeping secrets from him, including her true identity. It will take all of Rudy’s cunning and persistence to find the culprit in a group that includes an obsessive former client and his jealous wife, a creepy neighbor with a history of sexual harassment, and a sleazy Mormon bishop.

With the blackmailer escalating into brutal violence, Rudy must track down the sinister truth using a combination of old-fashioned detective work and Internet sleuthing.

Author's Note: This is a hard-boiled mystery recommended for adult readers only. Contains mature themes, violence, profanity, drug use, nudity, and sexual situations.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fast and enjoyable read 3 May 2011

A.K. Smith updates and plays with the Noir mystery. Her characters are interesting and often unexpected. I read much of the book on a plane trip, and the time flew. I was both entertained and absorbed by the story. She delivers with crisp clear writing. A great first novel.

I don't have the time to read many books in one sitting like I did this one. I expect to purchase anything else A.K. Smith publishes.

4.0 out of 5 stars You know the old saying, 24 Aug 2011

hooker with a heart of gold. Lila for the first time in her life feels independent and on her feet after a messy divorce. Then a car tries to run her over. Seems someone is out to get Lila. Hmmmm she is a high-priced call girl so is it the bi-ex? the wife who found out her husband dropped thousands of dollars on Lila? her partners? a creepy neighbor? Lila hires a PI, Rudy, to find the culprit since she can't very well go to the police for help until she knows who's trying to kill her and why. I did like the way the characters were handled and I didn't find cliches about the world's oldest profession. This is an adult-themed mystery.
