Product Description

It was in the 1980s that Sal Solo came to prominence, being the lead singer, songwriter and producer of Classix Nouveaux. The band had chart success at home and abroad and were renowned for their hard work, performing all over the UK and extensively around the world.

In 1983 Sal had become disillusioned with the record industry and had taken himself off to San Damiano, in Northern Italy. It was there that he had a life-changing experience; he became happier with himself, and much more relaxed.

Sal wrote and released a single called ‘San Damiano’ which became a huge hit, not only in the UK but around the world, even making it to number one in Poland. TV, radio and numerous press interviews followed. This was a very different Sal Solo to the one the public had seen only a couple of years previously.

‘Music and You’ was the follow-up single in 1985. Sal asked The London Community Gospel Choir to guest on the record and together they appeared on various peak time television programmes. And Sal appeared on quite a few British Sunday evening television programmes including The Rock Gospel Show. It was Sal's manager, Falcon Stuart, who later said: "Sal is one of those rare artistes who is prepared to stand up and be counted both musically and morally."

Cherry Red Records reissues "HEART & SOUL", the 1985 debut album from Classix Nouveaux frontman SAL SOLO and includes bonus tracks and previously unreleased material.

Coincides with the re-release of Classix Nouveaux's third and final album 'SECRET' on Cherry Red Records.

Sal Solo was once lead singer , main songwriter and producer for Classix Nouveaux , an 80,s band of predictably preposterous haircuts and preening pomposity whose biggest hit "Is it A Dream" was ludicrously enjoyable. By 1983 Sal who eschewed the bouffant based ephemera of that era by having a shaved head was disillusioned with the music industry and so took himself off to a retreat at San Damiano in Northern Italy where he underwent a religious conversion .

Inspired by this experience he wrote the single San Damiano which became a big hit in the UK and even reached number one in Poland. It's one of those songs that I secretly loved but would not admit to it even under the pain of extremely nasty torture involving white hot pointy implements .Nowadays as a fellow baldy and having long since shed any pretence to street cred I am happy to admit to loving that song. This is the album that followed that single -with five bonus tracks- and it's a mixed bag but anyone, like me , who thought San Damiano a terrific song will find much of "Heart And Soul" equally enjoyable.

Recorded with The London Community Gospel Choir and voices from the St Philips Choir this is an album that doesn't so much scream Eighties at you but coo it on a surge of angelic voices. Bombastic percussion , keyboards that twinkle in a an effort to gain twinkle bonus points, burbling slapped bass lines and a general feel of opulent over production. It's like Scritti Politti circa "Cupid & Psyche" doing "Songs of Praise". But some of the songs here are good enough to blow away any prejudice. "Poland" ( Your Spirit Won't Die) written after a visit to that country has the sort of chorus that is SINGALONG in capital letters.....hence the capital letters. "Music + You" is just a tremendous pop song .

If you are a fan of the three albums from Classix Nouveaux, then you certainly will not be disappointed by the first solo album from Sal Solo. Even if the songs sound a little bit different to the ones of Classix Nouveaux, there is in fact no dramatic change of style and sound in comparison to the last Classix Nouveaux album "Secret". It is more or less a logical follow up to the work of Classix Nouveaux.
Concerning the songs it would truly be unfair to pick out one or several songs as the quality of the songs is equal. Moreover there is no drop of quality for the bonus tracks contained on this reissue. Finally, the liner notes give a good insight of the world of Classix Nouveaux and Sal Solo. I hope there will be more reissues of Sal Solo albums in the near future.

Lovely choral music, it remind me of my teenage years at Christmas. Very easy listening and I would recommend it.

I remember seeing Sal Solo some years ago on BBC Songs Of Praise, and realised what a talented man he was. The songs on this album have been recorded by many artists over the years. Wonderful.
