Amazon.co.uk Review

Popstars Extra offers a documentary adjunct to the horrendously compelling TV series about the whittling process that eventually resulted in the group Hear'Say. This concentrates on the five members who made the final cut, which is a shame, really, as much of the real fun from the series came in the early stages, scoffing till you were purple at some of the early audition casualties who were as deluded as they were talentless. Nonetheless, here we have Kym, Myleen, Danny, Noel and Suzanne's individual paths to pop glory, having proved their ability to render pop standards as diverse as "Bridge Over Troubled Water" to "Living La Vida Loca" in the same constipated cod-soulful tremor that seems compulsory for boy/girl bands nowadays.

It's hard not to be infected by their delirious joy as they're informed that they "made it" but the scope of their artistic ambitions beyond merely "making it" is depressing. When asked at a press conference how she feels about the legalisation of cannabis, Myleen answers with studied, professional blandness, "I don't think that's something I can say anything about". These are Stage magazine devotees, not mavericks-in-waiting. They hold up well together in their big house and under camera but the mood of bonhomie is too infrequently pierced--just the once actually when Svengali Nasty Nigel informs Kym she needs to lose some weight and she flounces out of the living room. A sadly truthful study in the mores of manufactured pop. --David Stubbs

This video is packed with gossip and information. It is a collection of the Popstars extra series which was shown on ITV2. The video takes you through the audition process again showing different interviews with Danny, Myleene, Kym, Noel and Suzanne at different stages. The video shows the events in more detail than the aired Popstars show. Clips are shown from the first audition right to when Hear'Say found out they had a massive Number 1 single in the bag called "Pure and Simple". Hear'Say talk about the auditions, their music, about the fans, other band members, being a popstar and the process of getting to Number 1. Unlike the show, the video holds un-cut information so you can see how Hear'Say REALLY are. With 96 minutes of every thing Hear'Say this is a must have for any fan. This video is a excellent buy especially if you haven't seen much of Popstars.

I think this video is great. Unlike the previous video brought out by Hear'Say, 'Popstars', it is just about Myleene, Suzanne, Noel, Kym and Danny. The other video was the auditions and included all the other contestants who entered. This video only includes the five, showing their audition songs and following them through untill they got picked to be in the band. It then carries on to show what happened to them from when they moved in the house untill they got their first number 1. This is a great video and is one that can be watched over and over by people of all ages.

Although I am an American, this five-member group can remind any of you of a certain program from MTV, The Real World. The similarities lie in the rawness of the chosen ones. The group's debut album is superb, even though I watched the US version of Popstars w/Eden's Crush. Therefore, anything that is related to Popstars will let you in on just how real the music industry is on just about anyone. Well done!
