Queensryche aren't cool anymore. Fact. From a career spanning three decades they have ridden the waves of metal, glam/metal, rap/metal, grunge etc. and are still going strong today (albeit without the touring presence of founder member Chris DeGarmo).
Respect is due for this alone.
This re-issue of 1997's 'Hear In The Now Frontier' is a remastered version of the original release (which, frankly, makes very little if no diference to the already digital sound quality) and, as a bonus, adds 4 extra tracks.
This album's initial release sparked howls of disdain from many of the hardcore 'Ryche fanbase purely because of the shift from super-slick production values to this stripped-down sonic offering, but I would urge anyone to give this CD a second look and they might just find that this gem of an album nearly passed them by.
All tastes are catered for within. Opener 'Sign Of The Times' and second track 'Cuckoo's Nest' provide a classic opening to this set of lyrically heavyweight songs. Topics written about intelligently are so much harder to pull off rather than going for the lowest common denominator and this band has plenty of lyrical and musical skill to absorb the most demanding of listeners. Lighter moments come with the beautiful 'Some People Fly', and at the other end of the scale is the awesomely heavy 'Hit The Black'.
Three of the bonus tracks come from the band's MTV Un-plugged session in the early nineties and include an absolutely spine-tingling version of 'Silent Lucidity'.
4 stars for the original album but with the cracking extra tracks and sleeve notes.....it's gotta be the full 5. Enjoy!
