An innovative and entertaining new guide to health for all the family, 9 Oct 2008
This review is from: Health Matters (Paperback)
What is Health Matters about?
Health Matters is an innovative new book about lifestyle, disease risks, diseases and treatments covering a vast range of subjects from period pains to heart attacks; spots to skin cancer; itchy bums to sore heads; and big ears to big bellies.
The book includes absorbing and entertaining stories informed by personal experiences of real patients and backed up by ready reference to the latest clinical evidence - all reviewed by UK health professionals.
Health Matters covers the spectrum of topics looked up by the many millions of users of one of the UK's leading health Websites over the last four years:- contraception, alcohol, smoking, date rape, Alzheimer's, depression, autism... to name a few.
It has been shown that provision of high quality information in an easily read form can help people recover from illness. And there's even recent research showing carefully crafted fiction can have a positive influence on lifestyle and health. These are surely the aims of Health Matters - to reach parts other 'stuffy' books don't.
Who is Health Matters for?
The book is for everyone.
In the struggle to implement policies and meet targets that improve the health of the nation, individuals can often feel isolated and ignored. "Why is no one listening? Why has no one got time?"
Health Matters champions the individual. It brings together personal stories, scientific evidence and the skill of experienced medical authors and creative writers to deliver an absorbing, entertaining and educational read.
The purpose has been to share what patients feel, and provide high quality answers to medical questions people actually have, as well as addressing things that commonly go wrong. Many of the stories about people with medical problems have been written to appeal to children, but the book covers both childhood and adult concerns and would make an ideal family or medical practice reference**.
We hope you enjoy reading Health Matters.

**PS We tried out various extracts from Health Matters in 6 UK surgery and hospital waiting rooms. Despite being marked as 'not for removal', all but one of the samples were taken by patients and we have received phone and written requests from the medical units to provide more copies.
The one returned survivor had the following reader comments scribbled on the back:
"An excellent idea and a good read. Many thanks"
"Brilliant"
"Very entertaining"
Not exactly a scientific experiment - but a definite success.
