Product Description

Synopsis
"His work is magic." - Elisabeth Kubler-Ross This rare book is one of very few which look at what healing really is. Healing arises naturally, says Stephen, if resistances to it are removed. It starts when there is a will to be healed. He shares with his readers a perceptive and invaluable vision of healing at every level - physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual. Opening the heart of love and forgiveness, identifying hindrances, dealing with pain, emotion and abuse are all examined. With the aid of inner exercises, Healing into Life and Death helps people to take charge of their lives, their minds, their hearts and their healing process. Perhaps the most moving testimony to Stephen's compassionate approach to dying is encapsulated in this moving passage from his book. Here he describes being present with those whose dying marked a wonderful opening of hearts and release of spirits: "How much healing had occurred! They were more healed, more whole at their moment of dying than at any time in their life. They had healed into death, their business finished, their future wide open."

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful foundation for living, 27 Jun 2001
By A Customer
I love this book. Stephen draws on years of experience working with people facing terminal illness. If you get a cancer diagnosis, my guess is that you'd reach for a different book - probably one of those high profile numbers that seems to promise a miracle cure - because the author beat their cancer.

Stephen takes a different approach. This is a thoughtful discussion of key questions. He comments on some of the tyrannies that have developed through techniques and practices applied in a merciless way and seeks to avoid that.

There is something for everyone here. There are ways to lessen pain (physical, mental and emotional). There are ways to lighten fear, anger, hatred, sadness. He shines a clear light of hope for the weary and those whose lives are half lived or too narrow.

Sometimes a terminal diagnosis can be the trigger to propel people towards healing, sometimes it is a restless discomfort or sickness with life itself.

This is a book to savour, to draw on and return to again and again. There is so much peace and spaciousness in the approach.

If you want a quick fix, go for the famous teachers - particular the ones that have appeared on Oprah. If you still feel that something is missing or that you are weary, sad, scared or living half a life - even if your body heals - come back to Stephen and Ondrea. They wait patiently and welcome all readers with love and strong commitment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very powerful, 16 Jul 2003
Although this book arises from Stephen Levine's work with working with people with life threatening illnesses, I think that it holds deep resonances for anyone who feels that they are on a psychospiritual journey. Even if you are not "ill", you may well still need "healing" to become the person you have the potential to be, and this book provides signposts and techniques to help that process.
Some books are really powerful because the articulate what is floating below the surface - stuff you know but haven't named. Peck's "the road less travelled" was one such book when I read it many years ago. This book is another. Reading it I suddenly understand what I have been doing in my therapy and spiritual work.
It is even more powerful for me because I do have a chronic illness (ME/CFIDS), and want to work with the more-than-physical elements of it. This book not only describes some of the landmarks on that road but also provides very useful tools, such as meditation transcripts to help that process. If you are in that position too I recommend this book very highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite, 31 May 2009
By Starwalker (Old Warden, UK) - See all my reviews
This book is truly a companion for life ... and death. Like a watering-hole to which thirsty animals can return again and again. No matter which path you follow, or whether your emphasis is on spiritual practice or psychological work, you will find treasures in this book. In addition to the repertoire of skilful means which is offered, there is a tone of deep mercy and lovingkindness which itself is healing.
