I had enjoyed Dr. Halpern's recording of Yoga Nidra very much, so I decided to buy his book. It is a treasure of a book, that shows you how to make, little by little, some changes in your life in order to live a more harmonious and healthy life, that suits your constitution. I was already familiar with the main concepts of Ayurveda, but it is always useful to review these ideas and discover new facets. I particularly appreciated the chapter on the use of colours and music. I also liked the fact that he speaks about his experience and personal story most honestly.
One point, though, remains unclear for me: while Dr. Halpern clarify that most people have a mixed constitution, all the advice about food, as well as sound, colours etc., is given according to each single dosha and sometimes the suggestion are quite the opposite for two doshas (like vata-kapha) which both may be present in your constitution. So, I am a bit confused about this, but I have to say that, as far as I can tell, ALL the books on Ayurveda gives advice according to the single dosha.
On the whole, it is an excellent book and I highly recommend it. Even if you are new to Ayurveda, it is a masterly introduction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accessible introduction to a new/old way of healing 3 Dec 2011

Wow! I loved it. Even though I've been frustrated about interactions with our traditional health care system over the years, it was difficult to find something nontraditional that made sense to me. I had heard of Ayurveda, but until I read this book, which explained the science in the context of one person's journey and made it all very accessible - I didn't realize just how much potential we all have to heal ourselves. I strongly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars this makes good sense 26 Nov 2011

I have taught physical yoga (asanas) for 15 years as a personal trainer and embraced yoga as a spiritual path for the last 8 years. While I have heard of Ayurveda I have never studied it because it seemed intimidating, like learning a new language. Dr. Halpern's ability to weave together his personal stories, spiritual truths and science make this book a wonderful introduction to a complicated subject. With that said, this information just makes common sense. Dr. Halpern's book confirmed that when I am in balance my intuition has always guided me down the path of health. I found practical tips that I can apply to my life right now. I am also training to be a yoga therapist and had the pleasure of being Dr. Halpern's student for 3 days recently. By applying the principles of Ayurveda to yoga classes, students can go from feeling relaxed and more flexible, to having a true healing experience. I recommend this book as a way to deepen your own healing and for anyone working one on one in a healing capacity to better understand, and develop compassion for, your clients.

1.0 out of 5 stars New Age Ayurveda 8 Aug 2013
By B - Published on
I have studied at this man's "college" as well as reading this book. First off, he has no Ayurvedic credentials to speak of past the titles given by the college he invented and backed by the organization ( NAMA) that he helped invent. The core of his learning is from another person with no Ayurvedic credentials either (David Frawley). As a result there are numerous misconceptions propagated by them (and others in the west) such as the idea that you eat a diet for your prakruti, pitta is aggravated in the summer, and everything can be placed into simple Vatta-Pitta-Kapha categories. Just like the west turned yoga into asana, Ayurveda is becoming some silly VPK, "panchakarma" (there is practically no real panchkarma in the west at this time), weekend workshop affair at the hands of making a new industry. This is deep knowledge getting watered down to make a business and career out of when the proper infrastructure doesn't exist yet. While the intentions may be good and needed, it is being done in a very haphazard fashion. Unfortunately many people involved in healing are so well meaning and don't know any better that it is eaten right up without question. People are getting hurt, either quickly or slowly over time without knowing it. To be a real healer is a deep calling and does not come easy. Be careful folks.
While there are some practical tips here of use, you can get them from perusing one of many thousands of websites saying the same thing. The ancient texts warn about quack Ayurvedic doctors thoroughly, stating how even they can cure people by chance but a real physician steeped in this knowledge will harm no one. Check out the yelp review on CCA if you need second hand opinion. If you are thinking about enrolling at CCA, just read this book and you will get the majority of information that you would from attending their first year of "practitioner" training in a nice condensed form without the hefty price tag. I also recommend "Modern and Global Ayurveda: Pluralism and Paradigms" for a good introduction to issues surrounding globalization of Ayurveda and which also give this mans work the apt title of "new age Ayurveda". Todd Caldecot's textbook is also one of the best western references I've found. Hope this helps.
