Product Description

Do you sometimes feel like you don’t understand your reactions, feelings or thoughts? As if someone had hijacked the driver’s seat of your life and you wound up doing something stupid? Or regret your response? You don’t make sense in some situations, even to yourself?
Maybe a wounded inner role took over and you didn’t catch it...?
This book will explain what you can do about it.

Using EMDR therapy to treat our Inner Gallery of Roles has brought together the best of reprocessing and role therapy for trauma and painful memories. Written for the layperson and full of snippets from the author’s case studies, it will give readers information about emotional trauma and why we should treat it. In a fun, entertaining and yet informative manner, it illustrates how our inner roles run our lives – for better or for worse.

The purpose of this book is to help identify and clarify the existence of our Inner Gallery of roles – those who live inside all of us and that drive many aspects of our lives, such as the Scaredy-Cat, the Adolescent in Crisis, the Liar (that even lies to myself!), and the Inner Doctor. We will see how these roles are born and develop within, their functions and interactions in our lives, and how to heal the wounded ones, so that we can lead more fulfilling lives. We can also learn how to celebrate those roles that build us up and move us forward in life, and serve as positive resources when we need them. Although Role Theory is an integral part of Psychodrama the special emphasis in this healing process is on EMDR, a new reprocessing therapy developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro that was initially a form of trauma therapy. We tie together all of these aspects in order to help our Inner Gallery of roles develop “good neighborhood policies” and live in greater harmony and health.

In this book we will explain how:

  • roles develop inside of us 1

  • trauma and painful memories keep our roles from proper development as we grow up 2

  • this has impacted our lives 3

  • and what we can do about it. 4

It was a pleasure to read Esly Carvalho's recent book. This would be an useful ( and enjoyable!) reading for EMDR professionals as well as lay people who would like to know more about EMDR and the new reprocessing techniques ( such as Brainspotting). Esly Carvalho shares with the reader a range of case scenarios and explains in her friendly style how she conducts her creative work. Her knowledge and experience comes through time and time again along the book. A pleasure to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Understanding Yourself Better! 18 May 2013
By Earl R Poteet - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Dr. Carvalho has written a wonderful work that explains, in plain terms, why people act the way they do in certain life situations. She has taken ego state theory and explained it so that anyone can understand what is going on to cause certain behaviors. In particular, she states very well, what happens to a person who cannot seem to move past certain points in their lives. I particularly appreciate how she uses case vignettes from her past patients to show how her work of incorporating EMDR with the ego state theory to help them to heal from their past lives and be able to move on to greater success! Her techniques can also be used with other therapeutic modalities successfully. Understanding the inner parts (Especially those that were hurt) that we all have will help us in our struggle to achieve fulfillment in our adult lives!

This is a great read for anyone, not just those in the healing professions!

With a profound honesty, she takes us into an inner journey of reconnaissance and a desire of acceptance. Her language is simple, yet engaging.

I recommend reading this book both to the EMDR specialists (like myself) and the everyday person in search for answers to every day questions: who am i? why do i sometimes feel this way? why do i sometimes act this way? how CAN i change?

Bravo Esly!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Insider info" becomes available 26 Mar 2014
By S. Smith - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Dr Carvalho has taken the concepts of dissociation and the emotional parts of an individual's personality, which have so often been minimized, marginalized, or simply misunderstood in mental health treatment, and normalizes their historic experiences as factors and influences that have both supported, as well as limited, people at many stages of life. She describes the process of personal growth across the lifespan in the same variable way most of us experience it --not as a linear trajectory without pause -- but by stages, some smooth and strong, others as a struggle from which little immediate growth or purpose can be seen. That is until additional growth and subsequent therapy allows the connection and emergence of the Folks Inside.

Dr Cavalho's clear descriptions of her clinical application of EMDR avoids the too often pedantic recitation of process some other EMDR books subside into. Her clinical vignettes convey the ease with which long-troubling behavioral histories can be resolved while never failing to acknowledge the trauma the individual experienced as the precursor.

Both clinician and client will benefit from the wisdom contained by the Folks Who Live Inside.
