Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Healing Back Pain promises permanent elimination of back pain without drugs, surgery or exercise. It should have been titled Understanding TMS Pain, because it discusses one particular cause of back pain---Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)--and isn't really a program for self-treatment, with only five pages of action plan (and many more pages telling why conventional methods don't work). According to John E. Sarno, M.D., TMS is the major cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks and limbs--and it is caused not by structural abnormalities but by the mind's effort to repress emotions. He's not saying that your pain is all in your head; rather, that the battle going on in your mind results in a real physical disorder, which may affect muscles, nerves, tendons or ligaments. An injury may have triggered the disorder, but is not the cause of the amount or intensity of the resulting pain. According to Sarno, the mind tricks you into not facing repressed emotion by making you focus on pain in the body. When this realisation sinks in ("and it must sink in, for mere intellectual appreciation of the process is not enough"),the trick doesn't work any more and there's no need for the pain.(Healing BackPain should not be used for self-diagnosis. Always consult a physician for chronic or acute back pain). --Joan Price --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

I have never seen a patient with pain in the neck, shoulders, back or buttocks who didn't believe that the pain was due to an injury, a "hurt" brought on by some physical activity. Read the first page

I think this book will be most helpful for people who have been suffering with back pain for a long period of time (months to years). Most back pain lasts only a short time, and if it persists, you probably either have a really serious medical problem (that is usually obvious) or there are psychological factors involved.

If you've been through the conventional medical system with your back pain for a long time with no satisfaction, have had many physical treatments (such as heat, massage, manipulation, etc.) with no relief, AND have had serious back pain issues ruled out, then I say it would be well worth your while to at least check out this book. While there are true physical causes of back pain that are not psychological, this book will make you think about any stress related issues that could be a part of your pain. Also HIGHLY recommend Treat Your Own Spinal Stenosis. Good luck!

Very enlightening 30 Nov 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Having suffered with back pain on and off every few years and having recently experienced the worst episode yet with massive muscle spasm largely confining me to bed and lasting months this book which I chanced upon from an amazon suggestion has got to be the best recommended reading for anyone suffering from backpain or other repetitive conditions like migrane rsi etc. Whilst having gone through the usual medical proceedures re having 3 surgeons examin me and and being diagnosed with an L5 slightly bulging and degenerated disc the opinions varied over my pain origination from possibly the inflammation round the disc area but could not explain why was it affecting my back with so much spasm ongoing and affecting nearly all of my back. One surgeon said that "the brain can generate pain you know" to me but at the time I took that as an interpretation that he thought my pain wasn't real and I was some sort of hypercondriact. Anyway now after many months of debiltating suffering I understand from reading this book what the surgeon was saying and only wish he had explained it better then. Spasm is indeed the worst ever pain you can experience with no let up unlike child birth!! and as the book confirms. But having an understanding of why it occurs makes all the difference. I was coming out of my worst period of pain and gradually being able to move again by the time I read this book but I believe the knowledge it contained or tangible explanations at least helped me then recover quicker. Your brain is truly in control of your body dispite most of us wanting to seperate the two and get on with our busy life without analysing and stoping to recognise that maybe we really cant go on like that. I think the book should be available to read in doctors surgeries.

New approach 14 Mar 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
As a doctor working in the area of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, this book really resonated with me.It was recommended to me by my physiotherapist son, and will indeed change my approach to certain patients. Unresolved anger is a constant theme in my work, and this book indicates a fresh approach to working with these patients.
