Product Description

Attention deficit disorder (ADD) is a national health crisis that continues to grow - yet it remains one of the most misunderstood and incorrectly treated illness today. Now using breakthrough diagnostic techniques, Daniel Amen has discovered that there are six distinct types of ADD, each requiring a different treatment. With recommendations for prescription drugs, nutraceutical therapy, cognitive programming, parenting and education strategies, biofeedback, self-hypnosis, and more, Daniel Amen's revolutionary approach provides a treatment program that can lead sufferers of ADD to a normal, peaceful and fully functional life. Sufferers from ADD often say 'The harder I try, the worse it gets' This book tells them, for the first time, how to get well.

This book uses pictures of SPECT brain scans and case studies to walk you through six different types of attention deficit disorder - the presented symptoms, the scan images, diagnosis and treatment. Clearly written and easily understood, the information is well presented. Dr. Amen's book probably should not be used as a self diagnosis tool, but will give you a good working understanding of what's going on in your head, and what can be done about it - sometimes as simple as just changing your diet.
If you often think "The harder I try to concentrate, the worse it gets" then you MUST read this book and do something about it.
This book has truly changed my life and the way I think about myself - I hope that it can change yours for the better too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful 21 April 2011

If you are dealing with ADD or have a loved one with any form of ADD this book will help you work out some of the symptoms you are encountering.

Dr. Amen's clinic in America is far ahead of much of Europe and this book helped us to identify some of the issues which are not generally recognised yet here in mainland Europe. Germany & Austria officially don't recognise this as an adult issue.

Many people seem to know ADHD but that is only 1 of 6 versions identified in this book. Very in-depth studies as to the difference, SPECT scans showing each different type's affect on brain function and good indication of causes and cures.

He looks to dietary, medical and behaviour management to find solutions.

It's not easy reading but comprehensive.

You can do Dr. Amen's questionnaire online (Google search Dr. Amen & ADD test) first if just trying to do some basic research. The book will explain more about the online results (test also in the book).

This book is a Godsend if you are trying to muddle through with a loved one who is not correctly diagnosed and is walking in condemnation from society for not conforming to their vision of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars very helpful and empowering 28 Oct 2011
By aw
I was a little sceptical on reading the tittle that it would not live up to its name but the book is fantastic. Very persuasive images of scans from Page one on all behaviour being positively or adversely influenced by your own inborn neurochemicals which are in turn influenced by lifestyle (alcohol, drugs, medicines, supplements..) There are numerous brain scans pre and 1-2 hours post treatment and the differences in each patient's scan is clear to a lay person. If you are not blessed with good genes Dr Amen who is a psychiatrist and one of the world experts on ADD is able to advocate the right supplements. If you have reservations about starting down the pharmaceutical route such as with a young child, He shows there is a role for natural, orthodox and neurofeedback routes for the various subtypes. Very well written. I have read several books on the subject but they all involve going and getting a diagnosis which is often the first stumbling block in the UK. This has been the most useful and empowering as you can trial the supplements for yourself first before deciding if you need to go down the medical route. The book also demonstrates how people with a lot of addictions from coffee to things stronger are often self medicating and trying to soothe their symptoms naturally if not always very efficiently. The improvement in our family life has been immense... This is the most informative book by far.

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting reading 20 July 2010
I enjoyed reading this book - it is underpinned by scientific studies (although i cannot comment on their accuracy) and a lot of what was written made sense in coming to terms and understanding how ADD affects a person. I am not sure that 'healing' ADD is possible, that it should be 'managed' but this book gives advice on how you may be able to optimise your strengths and limit ADD effects.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't fall for this 4 Jan 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Lissen my dear fellow so called 'sufferes' . i beg of you not to fall for anything stated in this book. Psychiatry = Con. the field of Psychiatry is one big money making scheme machine. I am pleading with you to realise now that you are not a LABEL…and do not let anybody label you or your children. Society of today simply cannot handle everybody to be growing and independently strong. therefore the people at the top have figured out ingenuous methods to label and separate some of us into groups of 'mentally ill' people. In order for us to become the label and ultimately turn the label into a self fulfilling prophecy. Do not for fall this trap dear friends. ADD is labeled based on behaviour! there is no science or evidence or test to determine that this is a so called 'illness of the mind' this is all bull!…Do not be shushed by the evil at the top…no body apart from your own parents wants to see you good..so imagine how much these experts so called. care about you or your feelings… they will be happy to give you pills and keep you in the web…so that you never grow and expand you capabilities….how can you possibly change behaviour with pills? how is it that these people claim to alter peoples behaviour via a physical thing from the outside (pill). its impossible…behaviour is learned! so is anxiety and most of these so called mental illnesses…it makes me sick to my stomach that they have all of us fooled into believing we are this label and that label…do you know that each year they take a vote to add on new mental illness to their lovely manual? how could this field of medicine sleep at night really? they have no explanation for these so called labels..and why they occur. the human mind is incredibly creative and believe me the people that feel these emotions of fear. anger..
