5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite novel, aged 12 to present!, 21 Nov 2005
I first read this book aged about 13, in the Science Fiction Special No 28, borrowed from my town library. It introduced me to concepts and dilemmas that have informed my entire adult thoughts: This Book Changed My Life. Parts of the book are pure adventure, parts are an intelligent discussion on what rights we have as individuals, and what we owe others in return. Is it "from those according to what they have to those according to what they need" or "mine is what I can take and hold"? Philosophy as exciting sci-fi, if you will. Or possibly, exciting sci-fi as philosophy.

Sadly, after I had borrowed and read 'SFS No 28' about 12 times, it was loaned to Stafford Prison Library and then stolen by some criminal! It took me ten years to acquire a copy after looking in every second hand bookshop I entered. That was five years ago. Now this excellent book has finally been reprinted, a shiny new copy can be yours (or perhaps your thirteen year old nephew's?) in only ten seconds... what are you waiting for? ;-)

5.0 out of 5 stars A desert island book, 4 Jun 2008
By
J. B. Smith "jbs1401" (York, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Healer (Paperback)
Possibly the widest breadth in the fewest pages of any sci fi novel. Combining a cracking good adventure story with lessons on companionship, what it is to be human (and alien, and both), written in a clear, approachable style. Very highly recommended - the book I would choose to take on a desert island with me.

4.0 out of 5 stars I miss this book, 3 Dec 2007
This review is from: Healer (Paperback)
I read this book when I was in my early teens. It is well written, entertaining, humorous and generally interesting. At the age I read it it was also a good lighthearted challenge to the basic dogma of socialist consensus that my teachers and mother had largely brought me up in which left me with a lifelong (so far) interest in political philosophy.
