This gargantuan four-CD set from Mo'Wax, a record label which is almost a genre in itself, runs the gamut of instrumental hip hop from genius to aural shagpile, and manages to take in a fair few other musical styles (drum and bass, techno) along the way. At the top end you'll find fine selections from the superb DJ Shadow, as well as Money Mark, the Jungle Brothers, Roni Size, the Beastie Boys and the Stereo MCs, plus excellent contributions by lesser-known knockout talents RPM, The (original) Dust Brothers and Sam Sever. At the lower end, there are noodling, jazzy tracks which clamber atop what may not even be particularly impressive grooves and ride them till they drop from exhaustion. In between, there are plenty of ideas which, while not always completely successful, are at least intriguing. More of an encyclopaedia than a mere album. --David Bennun

Format:Audio CD
This, along with vol 2a, has everything the MoWax/Ninja Tune connoisseur could dream of - A superb mix of chilled vibes that launched Lavelle's label and gave MoWax an underground status of the finest kind.
Warning: Once hearing this, the compulsion to buy the original sources of these tracks will be too strong and you may find yourself very poor, very quickly.
Favourite tracks include Vibert's Sharp AZ (some superb piano sampling) and Beastie's Flute Loop (a chance to hear this classic choon's gorgeous instrumentals).
A must for any newcomer to the trip-hop scene.
