Product Description

Product Description

Pigeonsford Estate is playing host to a group of close friends when one of their number, Grace Morland, is found dead in a ditch. The murder is made even more unusual by the fact that Grace was wearing her friend Francesca's hat, the same hat that only the day before she'd claimed she wouldn't be caught dead wearing.

Inspector Cockrill has known most of the friends since they were children. They are all from good families and very close to one another; how, then, could one of them be a cold-blooded killer? And if one of them had murdered Grace which one was it and why had they done it?

First published in 1941 Heads You Lose is a classic country house mystery that proves that in every friendship there are secrets, some of which are best left buried.

'Christianna Brand is not merely a purveyor of thrills or a maker of puzzles. She is a novelist.' Daily Telegraph

About the Author

Born Mary Christianna Milne in the Far East in 1907, Christianna Brand grew up in India before returning to England. Death in High Heels, her debut novel, was published in 1941. In the same year Heads You Lose was published and featured one of her best-loved characters, Inspector Cockrill, who went on to appear in seven of her novels. Green for Danger is perhaps Christianna Brand's most famous novel and was made into a film in 1946 starring Alastair Sim. She was nominated three times for an Edgar Award and was also the author of the children's series Nurse Matilda, which was recently adapted into the film Nanny McPhee. Christianna Brand died in 1988. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Any Christianna Brand re-issue will be welcomed by me. This is the first Inspector Cockrill book and, as so often in Golden Age Detective stories, we are in the familiar territory of the house party. The squire of the village is in love with Fran, but his neighbour is in love with him. Grace, the neighbour, is found dead - decapitated and left in a ditch. There are enough suspects and plots to make a very enjoyable story. The most famous book with Inspector Cockrill was the excellent "Green for Danger", but this is worth reading. A very enjoyable mystery.

More than a great classic detective novel 20 Mar 2003
By FRANCOIS - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is a very classic (and british) plot : somebody among a group of six persons killed two or maybe three women by severing their heads with different devices. Two lovely girls, an old lady, and older man, the husband of one of the girls and another one in love with the second girl. Who did it? There appears an english policeman who has known all six for long and who tries to find the culprit, with some unorthodox methods. Maybe he would prefer not to discover him, but he's obliged to by the quick events. You can try your little grey cells, like Hercule Poirot, but it wan't work. Just let yourself by taken by the plot, the author and both lovely girls, and enjoy it till the end. A bit bloody ? Well, not too much, as a matter of fact. And buy other books from C. Brand, with the same policeman and some of the characters of this book, "death of a Jezabel", "green for danger", "death in high heels"... It comes from the 50's, but it's very enjoyable.

Not my cup of tea 2 Jun 2007
By S. Schwartz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I am a big Christianna Brand fan (and that was even before the success of the Nurse Matilda stories), but this book did not do it for me. It started out good - an English country manor mystery with an exclusive list of six suspects, but the denouement just didn't ring true. Brand usually writes wonderful English mysteries in the classical style, and she usually has enough red herrings about to keept the reader on their toes, but in this book, the red herrings are rather obvious, and the actual murderer and the motives behind the murders were hard to believe. I will continue to read Brand's books because I do enjoy her writing and hope that the others are back to her usual standards.
