This was my third Osibisa album, and may well be theirs too, and it still sends shivers down my spine at times. Okay. The first album was the most amazing thing I'd ever experienced. African music churned out at a frenetic pace with hard driving bass, drums and percussion, overlayed with beautiful brass. Woyaya, the second venture disappointed a few, but I liked it and still do. This is better than Woyaya in many ways, because it takes what was good about that album and builds upon it, yet takes away some of the mediocrity that it had. "Ye Tie Wo" and "Che Che Kule" are my instant favourites, but "Mentume" has its merits too. The usual Osibisa brass sections are well structured and work well against the bass/drums back-cloth. I put these three albums onto a disc for my car, and my friend enjoyed listening to it so much, he went out and bought all three. I loved it when I first bought it on vinyl, and still love it now...Sadly, after this album, it all went pear-shaped. The record companies/producers managed to stifle their exhuberant talent in favour of more commercial, and, to be quite honest, soul-less imitation of their former glory. Chart success was as minimal as the interest the band seemed to show for this change of direction. "Sunshine Day" was probably the bands twilight before slipping into MOR obscurity. Buy "Osibisa". Buy "Woyaya" (or get the two as a set)...Then buy this...Just stay well clear of anything else. These three gems are Osibisa at their best....There was, incidentally, a solo album by the band's bassist, Spartacus R, but I never managed to track it down on vinyl or CD...Anyone know anything, please share...

The difficult third I think but a good follow on from the first two.Stand out track-the last 'Do you know'. Like the first two albums this crackles with warm, infectious sounds and energy. But perhaps there is an element of running out of ideas in the studio. They were an outstanding live act and all three of the first albums still stand up to listening. Now what happened to Assagai?
