Product Description

CD Description

The title of this lengthy, two-disc affair may be a bit misleading; it might suggest some sort of Prince-like construction full of finely wrought sonic details and painstaking production. In fact, the opposite is true--it's a raw, minimalistic, lo-fi effort that has the immediacy of home demo recordings. Fortunately, it's that very quality that has endearedCody ChesnuTT (the weird capitalisation is his idea, folks)to a panoply of critics, earning him a spot on countless best-of-2002 lists. Still, THE HEADPHONE MASTERPIECE didn't hit the album charts until 2003, possibly helped by exposure through touring with the Roots.
While this is a genre-spanning affair that incorporates pop, rock, soul, funk, and hip-hop in roughly equal measures, it's a million miles from the neo-soul of a Maxwell or D'Angelo. In terms of sonic context, ChesnuTT is more aligned with mercurial four-track scamps like Guided by Voices, churning out songs and snippets without any grand scheme in mind. Attitude-wise though, he seems to be coming from the hip-hop mindset, as the dominant lyrical preoccupations are world-beating braggadocio and the unabashed celebration of social and personal improprieties of every stripe. Whether you call Cody ChesnuTT pop, soul, or hip-hop, one thing is apparent from listening to the HEADPHONE MASTERPIECE; the man's got rock-star confidence to spare.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Lo Fi funk, soul, masterpiece, 29 Sep 2003
Oh my god its been a long time since something tugged on the heartstrings like this lo fi masterpiece. Ultra eclectic tarvelling the most wonderful souful cosmic landscape Cody Chesnutt is a genius. Ranging from prince to Mos Def to Sly to the Beta Band in influences each tune is delightfully difference. This album hits you the first time you hear it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unashamedly brilliant, 17 Jan 2004

This album is certainly not for everyone. If you like high production predictable pop, browse off to a Top 40 list. This, bless Cody, is a work of the heart.

There are some songs which simply don't work well, but they are few and far between. You are getting a double album for the price of one disc -- you can't complain. But duff songs aside, there are so many truly great songs that there is no reason to deny this album. Hats off to Cody - like all great albums, he hasn't taken the path of least resistance, lowest-common-denominator cliche-riddled music.

Not for everyone, but for those who like raw, emotional music from a real artist -- you shouldn't let this pass you by.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply breathtaking debut, 29 Sep 2003

1st thing to say is where did ChesnuTT come from? From nowhere he appears with a 35 track album of pure genius.

To describe this album in a genre of music is almost impossible, drawing on sounds from the worlds of Soul & Hip hop through to Rock n Roll. Won't say anymore than the Album title states, this is a masterpiece and you REALLY need to pick this one up..

Enjoy!

The sheer banality of the lyrics ruin what, musically, is quite a heady mix, more for white musos than black soul or other fans. Read more
