BBC Review

Anyone looking for value for money from pop music should be aware they’re on a fool's errand. The fiscal value of a song is massively subjective, for starters, and the entire industry is built upon a gold rush mentality. Some of those nuggets aren’t even yellow.

That said, it’s a bit ripe to mix cast-off recordings with previously-released album tracks and present it as a new mini-album, which is what The Saturdays seem to have done here.

The bare facts are these: In October 2009, they released Wordshaker, which featured the singles Forever Is Over and Ego, and a song called One Shot. Now, after a mixed reception, they've unearthed some new songs and padded them out with, well, the singles Forever Is Over, and Ego, and a song called One Shot.

These have been remixed so that they sound the same as they always did.

Of the new additions, Missing You is a stirring ballad which manages to shyly refuse to disclose this fact until you've heard it somewhere in the region of 30,000 times. Despite being likely to top the chart, it has been cited as proof that the band are in some kind of decline.

Which is a shame, because in quality confections like Higher, and the languid Died in Your Eyes, there’s ample proof that the band’s heartbroken girls-together thing still has a lot going for it.

There again, Karma should carry a warning to all pop stars about the pitfalls of trying out snarky lyrics for size. It's essentially an Avril Lavigne cat-call, set to a CBeebies backing and features lyrics which are so dim they actually consider "I hope you choke on some really hot coffee" to be a workable insult.

So, Sats fans, what you get for your money are two potential future hits, four songs you probably already own, one slightly mad album track – Puppet – and a solid-gold clunker. That's not a mini-album, it's a double A-side, or an EP at best.

One Greatest Hits collection could mop up the best of this lot in a flash.

CD Description

Headlines! is an eight-track album that came as the result of studio sessions that were originally intended for a new studio album. The Saturdays had different plans, however. The album provides a bridge between the previous studio album Wordshaker and the next, including new songs, plus "Ego" and their number two smash from 2009, "Forever Is Over".

The ladies have done it again! Every song is a hit and if you liked their previous releases, you'll enjoy this one over and over again! My only complaint is, why only 8 tracks? If you're short some material, add previously released bonus tracks from past singles!

Great job girls, looking forward to the remixes and your next full length cd!

I love The Saturdays...and being an American who is a HUGE fan of British pop music...it would have been nice if they would have omitted Ego, Forever is Over and One Shot...they are all great songs...however...they were already on the first two CD's they released...it would have been nice to release on this CD all of their B-sides/unrealeased songs from their first two CD's in addition to the five new songs...

While I would have wanted The Saturdays to release a proper 3rd album instead of this 8-track collection, the girls, along with their new management decided to churn out Headlines to really see if the fivesome could last in the pop industry given the less than stellar performance of their second album Wordshaker, despite it being bannered by 2 smash hits (Forever Is Over and Ego). Headlines is ultimately cheaper, more accessible for the casual listener and limits the risk of having a scattered musical effort by just focusing on 8 songs.

Headlines includes 3 songs from Wordshaker, 2 top 10 hits: Forever Is Over, which still remains the oddball of the album as it was in Wordshaker, it still is the rockiest moment of the girls, vocally endearing and soaring and anthemic. Ego still is snappy as it was, infectious and earned its place as a Saturdays classic. The other Wordshaker song is One Shot, perhaps the best unreleased song from that album, which appears here in slightly remixed form, sounding more crisp, urgent and energetic while still retaining its template from Wordshaker.

Onto the 5 new songs: first single Missing You is a song you will either love or hate. Initially, I was dumbfounded on why the girls chose this to banner the Headlines project. It took me a couple of listens to really appreciate the song. The song is more of an evolved version of the Saturdays' sound, from Frankie's vocodered bits of 'I miss-missing you' to the dreamy synths scattered in the chorus which borrows a beat from Timbaland/OneRepublic's 'Apologize', the song grew on me like a rash - real intriguing sound for the Sats. Higher is the Up/Ego of Headlines, cleverly structured verses, a crazy hook and middle 8, it's the sound we already knew from the girls, guaranteed to run in your head for days. Died In Your Eyes is the power ballad of the album similar to Here Standing from the last album, over-the-top and powerful - what I appreciate about the song is that it gives each girl to shine vocally. Karma is a hypnotic, dizzying piece of dance/electropop, and while the lyrics are juvenile, you couldn't help but just love the song for its unabashed pretentiousness which could have come from any album of a Disney pop princess. Puppet is the weakest song of the album but by no means a bad song, it just starts rather unmemorably but starts to punch during the chorus, still dancey and fun.

What frustrates me about this album is that they could have easily added 2 tracks to make this a proper album. With that said, I think that Headlines is the girls strongest, most fun and hit-filled effort - no fillers at all. Only time will tell if the girls will reach album #3, with Headlines, I don't see any reason why they shouldn't.
