This was a real disappointment - indeed at one time I did not think that I was going to finish the book and for me, and I have lived in Melanesia so there was an additional reason to be interested, this is a strong comment. I was (and am still) looking for help in understanding the social history of psychology and psychiatry. In Shepherds book this is 'hidden' in the stories of the 4/5 characters. Of course the WW1 background is extremely interesting, but even then the story told in terms of biography, while an interesting approach, does not help me with my objective. That said, there was obviously an enormous amount of research done and if the vagaries of an academic career at a time when there was certainly an academic 'class' (and people who thought that they had a 'divine' right to an academic life) is the thing that interests you then fine.

From the title I expected more science and less biography
