Roger Standing, Commander of The British Empire, and the Prime Minister's Special Adviser for Education, is murdered. DCI Tom Caton is not short of suspects. But if this is a simple mugging gone wrong then why has MI5 ransacked his apartment, and why is Special Branch disrupting the investigation? More About the Author

I have written nine crime thriller novels to date - all of them based in and around the City of Manchester.

My first novel The Cleansing was short listed for the Long Barn Books Debut Novel Award, and has just been awarded the e-Publishing Consortium Writer's Award 2011. My fourth in the series - A Trace of Blood - reached the semi-final of the 2009 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award. All nine have featured in the top ten paid for bestsellers in the Amazon Kindle British Crime Fiction category. Number ten - Angel Meadow - is due out in September 2014.

My novels are part of a series featuring DCI Tom Caton and his team. Part police procedural, part crime thriller. They can also be read as stand alone novels. A Fatal Intervention, although part of the series, is more appropriately a stand alone crime thriller because of the limited appearances of Caton and his team.

Also available is an an anthology of short stories - Breakfast at Katsouris - and a unique book of Short Walks around the city of Manchester - Caton's Manchester - incorporating crime scenes featured in my novels.

Born in London with four generations of Metropolitan Police behind me - my grandfather was a founding member and head of the Flying Squad - I moved North forty odd years ago and fell in love with the people, the countryside, and the City of Manchester. I try to capture the spirit, exuberance, and history of the region in my novels, as well as some of the dark underbelly in which Caton works.

If you have not read Bill Rogers you are in for a treat, this is fabulous. I couldn't put it down, a real find. This is a new author to me and one that is definitely worth reading. Caton is a great character and you will love the twists Rogers puts into his books. This author's work should be on tv he really is that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars The head case 11 Oct 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
In this story Bill Rogers builds on the character of Tom Caton , an unusual subject for a murder enquiry makes this novel all the more intriguing, Bill Rogers graphic knowledge of Manchester is the backbone to the story line. With so many twist and turns I found it almost impossible to put the book down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great page turner 24 July 2012

What a great read! This is the second book I have read in Bill Rogers' series of Detective Caton novels. I have never been a great fan of detective novels but Bill Rogers has got me well and truely hooked. As with his first book, The Cleansing, I so enjoyed the story line of The Head Case. The fact that I come from Manchester and that the majority of locations BR mentions in the plot and Detective Caton's travels are real places and are so familiar made it even more enthralling. As I didn't know the murder site in his first novel I even went and searched it out when I was in the vicinity. I found it was exactly as described in his book, which made it even more eerie. Just started his 3rd novel in the series - The Tiger's Cave I'm only 6 pages into it and already can't wait to get back to it so, sorry must go!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but maybe not his best 21 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have read other Bill Rogers books in the Tom Caton series and was looking forward to reading this one. On balance it was a good book and well written as usual but I feel that something was missing, possibly not fast moving enough as I found that it took a lot longer to read than expected as I put it down several times.

The story is based around the murder of an eminent educationalist and searches into his background to identify a motive and killer with a number of false trails as one would expect. Perhaps just a little heavy going for me although I will still persevere with the rest of the series based on past books.

I would suggest that you don't just avoid this but if you are a beginner to Bill Rogers there maybe better books to start off with.

3.0 out of 5 stars Damp squid ??? 10 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found this book a reasonably good read but there are many missing words and typos which I found irritating and unnecessary in this age of technology. I also thought "damp squid" instead of "damp squib" unforgiveable from a man of education such as Bill Rogers. Still, I will continue to read his books, hoping for perfection.

I really enjoyed this book - it is a great follow up to the first by the author

I am also pleased that another reviewer has highlighted some errors in the kindle edition - it did not stop me enjoying the book, it just made me page back a few times to ensure that I was not going mad!!

All in all - yep, I enjoyed this book very much. Just downloaded the 3rd in the series!

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor 20 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the second Bill Rogers I have read, so hoping that it would be as good as the first. Not so. It was drawn out, unimaginative and had lots of missing words ! I've already downloaded the next one and am hoping for an improvement !
