Book Description

A twisted novella from the author of The Lanarkshire Strays series.

It's not easy being Head Boy.

Follow Davie Diller for seven days as he navigates his way through his turbulent life. A scheming bastard in and out of school, Diller screws, drinks, snorts, cons and kills his way through the Lanarkshire underworld and attempts to survive the attention of his local drug-lord, Hondo, who's less than impressed by Diller's growing debt and status; He's also having a busy week at school.

A brutal and wickedly funny novella inspired by The Prodigy's 'Smack my Bitch Up’ music video, Irvine Welsh's "A Decent Ride" and by John Niven's 'Kill your Friends'.

The Lanarkshire Strays Series connects characters and stories from Lanarkshire. All books are standalone stories.

Praise for Head Boy:

"His Diller creation is in equal measures compulsive and repulsive." - Ryan Bracha, author of Tomorrow's Chip Paper and Paul Carter is a Dead Man.

“The main character pulls off the ultimate deception that even the most observant reader does not fully comprehend until the very end.” – Craig Furchtenicht, author of Dimestore Bandits.

"The language is strong and the violence is sickening yet it all blends together to be yet another triumph from the author who is maturing with every book. Simply stunning!" - Colette Brown, author of Maybe The Universe Just Isn't That Into You!

What the Readers say:

"Very different from the previous Mark Wilson books. Gruesome and gripping story, but still has that trademark underlying Lanarkshire humour - couldn't put it down. A fantastic read."

"Davie Diller is an emotionally inept young man and a scary bastard. I think I quite fancy him! I was particularly pleased to see PTSD feature in the novel and be handled in a respectful and realistic manner."

Head Boy is a rollicking mash-up of a book, a head-on collision between American Psycho and Ferris Bueller’s Day Out. Set in the post-industrial wastelands of Scotland’s old steel belt, the author gives us vivid characters (the ex-steelworker turned drug kingpin Big Hondo is particularly memorable) and a relentless page-turning narrative with the kind of unpredictable and unconventional story-telling we’ve come to expect from the great HBO/AMC TV of the 21st century. A white-knuckle ride of a novel.

Brilliant. Great read. Moreishly violent, or is it violently moreish ?
The undercurrent of naked deceit fair helps it belt along too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulously gritty read 24 Jan. 2015

Although this is a short book, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I enjoyed every page & there aren't many books I could say that about.

I grew up in the town this book is set in, which probably gave me the initial connection, but anyone could pick this up and become engrossed from the start.

Fabulous book. Highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars This is my kind of novel 11 Mar. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Head Boy had all of the key elements in place to make the perfect book for my reading tastes. Davie Diller, the dynamic anti-hero pulled my by the short hairs into a world of unsavory characters and dark situations. The main character pulls off the ultimate deception that even the most observant reader does not fully comprehend until the very end. I applaud Mark Wilson for his refusal to pull any punches and the courage tell the story in a way that a weaker-willed author probably would not have dared. From the violence that begets even more violence to the main characters own self-awareness of his deeply sociopathic tendencies, Head Boy made for one hell of a ride.
My only gripe is that Mr. Wilson owes me a few hours of lost sleep due to the fact that I could not put this book down at night.

I really enjoyed this story, partly because I live in Bellshill the town where most of the story is set. As an avid book reader it made a pleasant change to know the places and streets mentioned in the book. but even if you are not from Bellshill I am sure you will enjoy this book

5.0 out of 5 stars intense and creepy 1 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I am a big fan of Mark Wilson's last two books but was slightly put off by this being in the crime genre which isn't of much interest to me. Yet I am glad I read it even if I feel I must now go take a cleansing bath! The main character is creepy in the extreme and, in the Glaswegian vernacular, gave me the 'heebbie geebies'. You can't help but be repulsed by him and his mindset but he is certainly compulsive.
The story is intense, set over 5 days, like a countdown to armageddon but set in Bellshill. It has a twist in the tale that will leave you open mouthed and rereading a bit like rewatching The Sixth Sense to see why you hadn't figured out the twist. (actaully I figured that one out by 2o minutes in..so HeadBoy defeated my 'twist radar').
a great compulsive read with characters who are well rounded and some who are archetypally familiar ( I need to change my circle of friends!).The language is strong and the violence is sickening yet it all blends together to be yet another triumph from the author who is maturing with every book.
simply stunning!
