5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for all Sci-fi fans 2 May 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I am told that David Langford is a wellknown figure in science fiction fandom, a subject about which I know nothing. That is despite this book of dismayingly accurate pastiches and spoofs. Just as you'll never read D.H. Lawrence again after Cold Comfort Farm so too this book will colour any subsequent readings of writers as diverse as Frank Herbert and Michael Moorcock, Isaac Asimov and The Brothers Grimm.

The pieces are affectionate but take no prisoners. The second half of the book contains longer pastiches which move beyond satire in many cases and become loving tributes to some of the greatest writers of the 20th Century. If you like Borges, Rex Stout and G.K. Chesterton then you owe it to yourself to read this collection. Indeed the Father Brown pastiche "The Spear of the Sun" evokes an alternate reality which part of me finds worryingly appealing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Run, don't walk! 9 Oct 2004
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Hilarious, intelligent, and full of affection for its targets, David Langford's collection of spoofs and parodies are a joy to read. I cried with laughter reading the Frank Herbert "hommage". Now stop faffing about here and get a copy; then find anything else by this highly talented writer who really should be far better known.

Please note that I have not read this book and am only reporting that the two reviews below are to different books, not the one listed on this page. Amazon, is someone asleep at the wheel?
