Book Description

1 Dec 2009
The book chronicles the life and career of footballer Peter Ward who played for Brighton & Hove Albion,
Nottingham Forest and England. Ward also played professionally in the USA and was the Player of the Year in
1982 when part of the Seattle Sounders team that played New York Cosmos in the Soccer Bowl.
The book will be an engrossing read for all football fans - especially those of the teams that Ward played for
and for fans of `real' football in the 1970s and 1980s.
In his time at Brighton Ward became the club's record goal scorer (a record that still stands) and made a
stunning England U21 debut scoring a hat‐trick at Brighton's Goldstone Ground. Ward's success at Brighton
made him one of the most high‐profile players of his generation and he remains undoubtedly the most
popular sportsman that Sussex has ever seen.
A big money move to double European Champions Nottingham Forest saw Ward experience the controversial
techniques of legendary management duo Brian Clough and Peter Taylor first hand. Clough's refusal to allow
Ward to return to Brighton to play in the 1983 Cup Final forced the striker to turn his back on British football
and he returned to the USA to play for Seattle and followed that with stints with the Vancouver Whitecaps and
a number of professional indoor teams. Ward temporarily returned to the outdoor game playing for Rodney
Marsh and Mark Lawrenson at the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
Since retiring from the professional game Ward has been part of a number of amateur US National
Championship teams and continues to play and coach in Tampa, Florida.

Review

It [the book] is one of the best of its type I've read for a long, long time.
Wardy really leaps out of the pages. His infectious personality comes through from the start and the revelations are both choice and amusing.
I particularly liked the format using the memories of others interspersed with Ward's observations and thoughts. --John Vinicombe, legendary Brighton Sports journalist and author, Dec 2009

...A very interesting and entertaining read.
He Shot, He Scored is a must-read for supporters of the Seattle Sounders or Tacoma Stars of those years, or for anyone who wants to follow one example of a life across two continents, connected by the sport of football, and involving soccer in the Puget Sound region. --Seattle Examiner, March 2010

...the beauty of Horner's book is in the detail. Interviews with a host of former players and managers, most notably Goldstone mastermind Alan Mullery, help piece together a fascinating tapestry not only of Ward's rollercoaster career but also of football from another era. --Backpass Magazine, February 2010

...a colourful career on both sides of the Atlantic captured in impressive detail by Matthew Horner.
Horner set out to write the definitive record of Ward's career and the depth of his research will go down well with those who lived the heady days and those who just wish they had been there. --The Brighton Argus, December 2009

It is now more than 30 years since Burton Albion unearthed arguably their greatest-ever player.
Little did they know when a slip of a lad reported for his first training session it would be the stepping stone to a glittering career.
That player was Peter Ward, whose story is told in a fascinating new biography by Matthew Horner. --Burton Mail, December 2009

From the Inside Flap

Peter Ward made his Brighton debut in front of the BBC's Match of the Day cameras and scored a goal within 50 seconds. Over the next four years his flamboyant style and goal-scoring exploits made him one of the most popular footballers of his generation.
An on-off move to European champions Nottingham Forest eventually happened in 1980, and for three years Ward tried to make an impact under the watchful eye of managerial legends Brian Clough and Peter Taylor.
A loan move to the Seattle Sounders led to Ward being named the 1982 NASL Player of the Year, and started a successful career in North America playing both outdoor and indoor soccer.
This is Peter's story and includes contributions from those who know him best; his family and friends. Also included are interviews with numerous footballing icons from the 70s and 80s including:
Alan Mullery, MBE
Rodney Marsh
Mark Lawrenson
Viv Anderson, MBE
Brian Horton
Ian Wallace
Gary Mills
Jimmy Case
Alan Hinton
Sammy Morgan
Gary Williams
Ray Clarke
Paul Hammond
Benny Dargle

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic biography of a true legend! 2 Dec 2009
By Deano
Format:Hardcover
"He shot, he scored, it must be Peter Ward, Peter Ward, Peter Ward!" was sung by thousands of Brighton & Hove Albion supporters on the terraces of the Goldstone Ground during the 1970s and 1980s. Peter Ward, Brighton's all-time greatest player and goalscoring record holder of 36 goals in one season, is a true Albion legend.

This biography, written by Matthew Horner, a lifelong Seagulls fan, provides a fascinating insight into the life and career of the Brighton's all-time greatest player. The author has brilliantly documented Wardy's life and playing career in England, with Burton Albion, Brighton and Nottingham Forest under Brian Clough, to his time in North America, where he was awarded the NASL Most Valuable Player in 1982. The book includes some great contributions from family, friends and many of those who played with or managed Wardy, including Alan Mullery, Mark Lawrenson, Brian Horton and Jimmy Case. Matthew Horner has written a fantastic book about a true footballing legend. An essential book for all Brighton fans and anyone with a love of football/soccer.
