Horror and humour - a gruesomely funny combination,
By Annabel Gaskell "gaskella2" (Nr Oxford, UK) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Hazel's Phantasmagoria (Hardcover)
I looked up the word 'phantasmagoria' (just to check, you understand!), and it can be a magic lantern effect, or a medley of illusive images - so, given that this book is about rather real bad dreams, it's a highly apt title for this macabre and gruesome tale.
Hazel, who is rather highly strung, is deposited with her Aunt Eugenia and cousin Isambard while her parents swan off to Egypt, and discovers a crumbling mansion with bumbling servants, together her hateful and controlling aunt and weird cousin. Having nothing to do, other than to help Isambard with his weird menagerie, she ventures into the woods - where she meets the stuff of nightmares ... A brilliant older children's story that will entrall adults too, as well as fans of Lemony Snicket and Roald Dahl, with its mixture of horror and humour.

Just re-read this, simply because it passed through my hands again and I couldn't put it down - again!!! It's a real gem of a book from a gifted storyteller. I think I laughed even more the second time round! Hazel's stay with her strange aunt and her even stranger cousin is so bizarre .........actually, I won't even try and explain it here - it would spoil the fun if you decide to read it for yourself!
Where is your next book, Mr Deeny? I am waiting impatiently!

Exciting and creative new author,

This review is from: Hazel's Phantasmagoria (Hardcover)
There are not many books that can make a whole family laugh out loud but Hazel's Phantasmagoria does. I bought a copy as a birthday present for my son - along with a Nintendo DS, guess which present won - the book! Yes, this book is actually good enough to tempt children away from computer games and get them hooked into reading - I would even be bold enough to compare it to the creative genius Roald Dahl. By the end of the week we were creeping into our son's bedroom to pinch the book to finish it ourselves as we couldn't wait for the next bedtime instalment. I would recommend this for children aged 9 - 14, and their parents too! A fantastic mix of beautifully crafted characters and fast paced storyline which culminates in an ending that, despite the humour, reminds you to be careful what you wish for...
