Product Description

What lies beneath the millions of orbiting nanotech satellites that shroud the world called HAZE? Major Keir Roget's mission is to make planetfall in secret, find out, and report back to his superiors in the Federation, the Chinese-dominated government that rules Earth and the colonized planets. For all his effectiveness as a security agent, Roget is troubled by memories of an earlier mission. When he was assigned to the Noram backcountry town of St. George, he not only discovered that the culture was neither as backward nor harmless as his superiors believed, but he barely emerged with his sanity whole. Now, scouting Haze, he finds a culture seemingly familiar, yet frighteningly alien, with hints of a technology far superior to that of the Federation. Yet he is not certain how much of what he sees is real - or how to convey a danger he cannot even prove to his superiors, if he can escape Haze.

L. E. Modesitt delivers yet another fascinating sf novel. Through the missions of agent Keir Roget the author offers a careful depiction of two futuristic yet perfectly coherent societies that have to come to terms with each other existence. This is a recurring theme through this author sf work and one that he excels in delivering through intriguing characters.

I am a huge fan of this writer, constantly amazed at his output and creactivity. This book is an outstanding read, well crafted and with a very clever theme running throughout. Very topical considering the UK is the most monitored country in the world. Please buy and read - also look at all his other creations - pure genius

Great Read ... 10 Aug 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
It reads more like a book from an older era - I've been reading too much Banks / Hamilton recently I suppose. There are way fewer 'sci-fi' terms in this book, but the story and pace are relaxing =) If you like Modesitt - then you should like this. It's not space opera, or high tech, but just pleasant. It's an odd book to categorise.
