Why 4 out of 5 for a great mower? I spent a lot of time looking at mowers, as this was my first ever purchase, my first mower being a hand-me-down Mountfield petrol (17" cut, B&S engine, UK owned when built) which was great until the crank bent and I was told it was not worth the cost of trying to replace and obsolete, and then I had a borrowed Honda HRB (18", Honda power). The Hayter is a smaller cut, which bothered me a little before buying, but as it turns out it only means 2 additional lengths of the garden when compared to the Honda. It was lighter than the Honda by some 20kg, which is fab, and it makes easy work of the grass. It reminds me more of the Mountfield (who are now owned by Italian group GPP), and the B&S Engine is still a very similar, you say nostalgic, design, but it does cough and splutter a bit, whereas the Honda was as smooth as silk. I can see the difference in build quality too - the Honda was rock-solid, nicely designed, and I didn't have to push a silly red rubber button 2 or 3 times before starting to prime it. It also allowed me to leave the mower in idle with the rotor disengaged (great if you have kids), whereas the Hayter stops the minute you let go of the handle, so you have to restart each time, and I find that slightly annoying. All in all, the Hayter is a lovely little machine and does a great job, and with all that Aluminium and ABS, won't rust at the first stone chip. If I were a richer man though.... the Honda would be tempting.
