Haydn's Seven Last Words, performed here by the Rosamunde Quartett, proved one of the most unexpected successes of the composer's life. In 1786 he was commissioned to write some instrumental music to be performed during the annual Passiontide service in a church crypt in the Andalusian city of Cadiz: it consisted of seven sonatas, preceded by an introduction and concluded with an "earthquake", and was designed to intersperse readings of the liturgical text. So well received was it that he immediately rearranged it for string quartet, and authorised a piano reduction, before going on to write a choral version; all three were regularly performed in his lifetime. In 2000, Ricardo Muti joined the long list of distinguished conductors who have put their stamp on the orchestral version; the Rosamunde Quartett's version stands at the opposite pole. Its opening is positively glacial--very suggestive of a crypt--with a tone-quality so bleached and free of vibrato you might almost think you were listening to a consort of viols. Gradually, warmth and colour are allowed to assert themselves as Haydn's plangent melodies come to the fore. This is a noble rendering: very much the sound of today. --Michael Church

A cyber friend in my classical world put me on to this cd in October, I showered the stored but could not find it anywhere. Praise be for Amazon!!, this is the String Quartet version of Josef Haydn's setting of the Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross, incorporating seven movements with a introduction and finale, here the Rosamunde quartet give us a truly realised version of this masterpiece. Each movement is written in adagio form and set from words to music for quartet. For me its one of Haydn's greatest works. I went as far to say as this cd was my musical discovery of the year, the best cd I have purchased from Amazon this year to date. The Rosamunders play in complete harmony with each other, each instrument violin, second violin, viola and cello working individually but also part of the whole to create such thrilling music making. I also own the orchestral version of the Seven Last Words, but believe me when I say that the personal and intimate way to listen to this work is in the quartet form, with the Rosamunders one can't go wrong, buy it from Amazon because the shops probably won't have it for sale!! 6 stars out of 5, its that Damned good. If you are about to add something new to your collection today, you could do no better. Essential listening, purchased from an Essential provider!! J A Taylor. A sheer delight!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stark, unadorned beauty 26 Nov 2002
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a tremendous recording of Haydn's supremely melancholy work based on the last words of Christ from the cross. The music embodies a powerful empathy for Christ's sufferings, and those of humanity since that time. This is magnificent music, both from a spiritual and a purely musical point of view. While ECM is perhaps for many people a label most strongly connected with European jazz noodlings, this recording (and many others of classical music from Bach to Part) shows how beautifully they record and present classical music. An absolutely riveting performance and recording.

4.0 out of 5 stars Played with Dignity and Respect 19 July 2009
By Karl W. Nehring - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The full title of Haydn's composition is usually given as The Seven Last Words of Jesus Christ from the Cross. The shorter version above is given on the back cover; the front cover and spine feature the even more truncated (and secularized) The Seven Words. (Note that "words" would be better translated as "sayings" or "utterances.") There are several recordings available of this piece arranged for chamber orchestra, but you can see from the header above, this arrangement is for string quartet. The Rosamunde Quartet plays the piece with dignity and respect. Perhaps some listeners would crave more overt drama, but I find their reflective approach most enjoyable. The sound quality is warm and comfortable, and the liner notes are interesting and informative. This is a truly excellent release.
