This classic performance of Haydn's greatest choral masterpiece was beloved tenor Fritz Wunderlich's last recording. He sings all of the arias, but he died before finishing the recitatives, which are here taken by Werner Krenn. The recording is, in addition, one of Herbert Von Karajan's finest, vastly better than his later digital remake. His interpretation is straightforward and impressively large in scale, but never pompous or sanctimonious (which was Karajan's big problem in music of a religious character). The truth is, Haydn's consistently fresh and unpretentious invention acts as a positive anesthetic against bombast, and the composer himself once said that thinking of the Creator always made him irresistibly cheerful. With The Creation, Haydn returned the favour. --David Hurwitz

With any over-recorded piece, it is easy to obtain a mediocre version. This recording though made 18 years ago is technically brilliant with a fresh vibrant chorus which conveys the excitement of Creation and really brings the piece alive. I have found it helpful as the Choir for which I sing prepares to perform it soon

This was the first recording I listened to of The Creation - many years ago now - and the best I have found. It has good tempi and great articulation from the Solists especially Auger in 'The marvellous work' her top C is wonderful. Achieved is the Glorious work is also taken at a very good speed and the balance throughout is very good.

There's lots to admire in the performance in this recording of the Creation in English, using large forces with modern instruments but in an 'historically aware' performance style. Indeed it was my favourite for many years, but I think it is now eclipsed by the McCreesh version which uses original instruments.

On careful listening, I find the recording of this version by the CBSO and Simon Rattle a little 'artificial'. I hear pools of spot-lit sound across the stereo stage with emptiness between them. The pools have a different acoustic to the rest of the stereo stage. It was only on making comparison with the McCreesh that I really noticed the difference. I don't want to make too much of this, as the Rattle version has a lot going for it, not least the excellent soloists.

If you are looking for an English version of the Creation and dislike original instruments, then this is arguably one of the best, and unlikely to disappoint.

...which is the only reason this drops a star e.g. at 'normal' volume setting the 'surprise' you get on CD1 track 2 at 2'02" is far greater than that on this Composer's symphony of the same name! (at least on my copy).

Solution: using 'Audacity' or another editing program & effect 'amplify' to selectively boost or cut appropriate passages a few db the result is perfect.

One of the greatest of the choral works, The Creation will raise hairs on the back of your neck no matter who performs it - and this one is excellent.

Prior to receiving this disc, I attended The Creation at the National Concert Hall, Ireland and it was a moving experience. The receipt of the disc the next day made it more special.

I didn't realise it would be English. It does say so but it isn't very prominent in the description.

I'm a bit disapppointed with the first disc. The choruses are wonderful but otherwise it feels a bit mechanical. It doesn't sparkle and I found the tempi a bit odd in places. For example, track 3 is so fast you can't hear the trills and then track 4 is too slow. I wasn't sure about the soprano: her diction wasn't very good and her ornaments seemed too much.

The second disc is better, really delicate and romantic and the soprano is marvellous.

The odd thing is when I play it on Windows Media the first disc comes up as Die Schoepfung, Herbert von Karajan yet the second comes up as The Creation, Simon Rattle. What's that about? Have I got mash-up? I bought it because it was Rattle and the CBSO.
