Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä - Patrick Gallois - Northern Chamber Orchestra - Nicholas Ward - Orchestre de Chambre de Cologne - Helmut Müller-Brühl - Toronto Chamber Orchestra - Kevin Mallon...

Review

With the symphonies, it is a bit of a mixed bag. There is no getting away from the fact that several, especially the early ones, are hastily cobbled together and do not reflect much inspiration. However, even weak tea can be made more palatable with an enthusiastic and imaginative execution. My favourite among the half-dozen ensembles sharing this enterprise are the Toronto Chamber Orchestra ledby Kevin Mallon, with Helmut Mueller Bruehl's Cologne Chamber Orchestra a close second. Yet none of the others even where drawn from Naxos earlier releases is less than adequate, and all benefit from superb reproduction. --Music Web International

I made a tentative step toward Naxos's Haydn symphonic recordings last year when I bought sypmonies Nos. 85. 92 and 102 by the Capella Istropolitania A pure delight. When I discovered that Naxos was offering the complete sympho nies in a boxed set, I, fairly foolishly, took a leap of faith and bought it. I also bought Dorati's set (a longtime dream). My love of Haydn's music had grown so much over the years and the price for each set was incrdibly low, that I felt I could take the chance. Nothing I would say could add to the luster of the Dorati cycle. It has been at the zenith of recorded music for half a century. But this Naxos set is adifferent matter. It offers smaller, unfamiliar chamber orchestras throughout, but, while I have not listened to them all yet, I have heard a sufficient number, and am delighted with the purchase. The lighter, airier sound produced by the chamber orchestra suits Haydn well. Always graceful, with a melodic phrase always at hand, Haydn does not translate well into the heavier germanic sound. On the CDs that I've played to date, the playing is no less crisp than that that of Dorati's forces, the effect is just prettier, providing a sense of the grace which permeated Haydn's work, even at its most intense. The sound produced by Naxos's recording engineers is clean so that the listener is free to concentrate on Haydn and not any blemish of the medium.e.

To be able to purchase this beautiful music at such a reasonable price is enough to cause any music lover's heart tyo beat faster. I highly recommend this set. Buy it and obtain a lifetime of enjoyment and delight.

I can't tell you how much unmitigated pleasure I've had over the past week or so listening to the treasures contained in this box set of all of Haydn's symphonies. I've been in a Haydn frenzy this past month what with listening to and reviewing the Naxos box set of all the string quartets, and now the sympnonies; the complete piano sonatas await. And on top of that I sang in a performance of Haydn's Creation a week ago, too. I keep thinking I'll get tired of Haydn, but it hasn't happened yet! (What a persistent set of Earworms his music provides!)

I have had a number of wonderful single recordings of Haydn symphonies over the years but never collected an entire set, not Adam Fischer's set on Brilliant, say, or any of the earlier ones like Dorati's with the Philharmonic Hungarica. Having gotten this set, though, I find myself not feeling any need to look any further.

First a few statistics. There are 34 CDs in the set which includes all of Haydn's extant symphonies, actually 108 of them if you count the 104 standard ones plus the Sinfonia Concertante (here in a terrific performance) and the so-called 'Symphony A' and 'Symphony B'. There are several orchestras involved, each with several CDs in the series to their credit. They are the Capella Istropolitana (Bratislava) under Barry Wordsworth; the Cologne Chamber Orchestra under Helmut Müller-Brühl; the Nicolaus Esterházy Sinfonia under Béla Drahos; the Northern Chamber Orchestra under Nicholas Ward; the Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä under Patrick Gallois; the Swedish Chamber Orchestra under Béla Drahos; and the Toronto Chamber Orchestra under Kevin Mallon. All of these groups acquit themselves with honor, even the ensembles one has never heard of.

Here are wonderfully played works of a Master. Not a dud amongst them.
Lots of CDs (34), lots of treasure to dip into. Inventive, attractive, majestic, playful, impish. I found the so-called "Sturm und Drang" compositions a lot more civilised than the appellation implies.
The CD do not play the symphonies from 1 to 108 in number order but the symphonies are grouped to keep early, middle, etc. together. There are a variety of orchestras and conductors recorded.
The booklet (in English only) is shared with the complete string quartets, the complete piano sonatas & the complete concertos, so it's quite big. It contains more than brief but less than comprehensive notes on each symphony, comprehensive track lists in CD order with cross reference of each symphony to the relevant CD. There are also biographical notes on the performers and everything fits into a nice sturdy box.
Good value, buy this.

It was a present for my wife who loves Haydn. I had already bought her the box set of Concertos by the same publisher (Naxos) and this now adds to the collection.
The recording is excellent and it is well presented as a box set.
