Very very special 10 Jan 2009
By enthusiast TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Oh, I have been in love with this set since the old days of vinyl! It is just so stylish. The playing of the LPO is really exceptional and Jochum does something that for me goes way beyond questions of how lively or how this or that. I love the London symphonies and I really like some other performances but for me only the Colin Davis set comes close. It is good, very good, but this Jochum set matches it for its many virtues and then adds something more, something hard for me to define ... it is concerned with style and civilised good humour ... it just makes you smile. This set is very very special and whether you have a version of these works or not you should add this.

Jochum's Steller Haydn 1 April 2003
Format:Audio CD
Eugen Jochum has too often been classified as a Bruckner specialist. He was equally at home with the music of Mozart,
Schubert,Beethoven, and especially Haydn. This set gives us
a wonderful complete set of the London Symphonies that were
recorded in the early 1970's with the London Philharmonic. The
touch is light and elegant and the all the finales are played
at break-neck speeds. What is so inviting is the first issue
on CD of his earlier DG 88 and 98 with the Berlin Philharmonic.
The 98 is even better than his London recording and 88 is pure
bliss. The addition of Symphony No.91 with the conductor's own
orchestra(the Bavarian Radio Orchestra) make this set a welcome
addition for a lover of Haydn.

Format:Audio CD
Jochum was a conductor of the generation of Böhm and Klemperer, but there is nothing old-fashioned or heavy-handed about these performances, which fizz with life, joy and vivacity. Jochum always gives the music an unerring sense of direction and purpose - listen to the beautifully expressive introduction to no. 101, and to the delightfully lively way the exposition is launched, to get a sense of the qualities of this set. Very strongly recommended - one of the best sets of the London Symphonies ever recorded (and recorded in London!).
