Adam Fischer and his players, with their distinctive Central European sound-world, give highly enjoyable performances: occasionally a bit rough round the edges, but always vital and attentively phrased. Compared with Antal Dorati in his classic Decca cycle, Fischer's tempi tend to be brisker (most obviously in the minuets), his manner more volatile, with more pungent textures and a sharper response to Haydn's humour. On the downside there are irritating eccentricities, such as the inexplicable distending of the tempo at the start of No. 78. Repeats are sometimes in short supply; and, as in previous issues in this series, Fischer seems to have a fetish for using solo strings, unmarked by Haydn - an ear-tickling effect once in a while, perhaps, but here a predictable gimmick. Still, for all my provisos, Fischer's readings would, just, get my vote over Dorati's: less consistent, but more vividly characterised and lighter on their feet.

Great continuation of a memorable series of performances,
By Laurence Gaymer (Shoeburyness, Essex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Haydn - Symphonies, Volume 5 - Nos 70-81 (Audio CD)
The Nimbus Records series of Haydn symphonies played by the Austro-Hungarian Orchestra conducted by Adam Fischer continues with this volume of "Papa Jo" Haydn's "middle" symphonies from mid 1770s to early 1780s. Not as popular as the later "Paris" and "London" sets these symphonies are none the less brilliant examples of the "Father of the Symphony" at work. The symphonies were recorded in the Esterhazy palace of Eisenstadt where they would have been originally performed and where Joseph Haydn would have personally conducted them and played with the orchestra. This boxed set is an essential to the Haydn lover and the penultimate in the set of 8 volumes which will complete the entire collection of Haydn's 104 symphonies.

Haydn' symphonies 70 to 81,

superb performances and well recorded. This orchestra treat these far from early Haydn symphonies seriously but with plenty of sparkle and anyone who thinks that a person who wrote 106 (yes, 106) symphonies must have run out of ideas will be pleasantly surprised. I found these performances superior to certain other performances I've heard on "period instruments".

Another great volume in teh collection,
By R. Graham - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Haydn - Symphonies, Volume 5 - Nos 70-81 (Audio CD)
With volume 5, Nimbus Records is one volume away from completing the entire collection of Haydn symphonies. Again, Adam Fischer conducts the Austo-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra and delivers a truly amazing listening experience. When I began my quest for a complete Haydn symphony collection, there were a few options. But this collection won out and I have not been disappointed with any of the volumes. Every CD is fully digital, from the recording to the mastering process. They are technically flawless. I don't profess to be a musical scholar so I cannot comment on the conducting, or the playing. I won't rant on about the choice to use modern instruments to play Haydn. All I will say is that I love music and that this volume, like the others in the collection are joy to listen to. In case you are wondering, according to Nimbus Records, the entire set should be finished sometime in October of 2001 - concluding with Volume 2. |
