Haydn to die for,
By
This review is from: Haydn: String Quartets Op.17 (Audio CD)
Joseph Haydn more-or-less invented the string quartet and produced a great number of them. The opus 17 set dates from 1771 during his early years in the service of the Esterhazy family. Despite their early date and notwithstanding the fact that they are rarely heard in the concert hall, all six quartets are fine, richly inventive works. The youthful players of the London Haydn Quartet specialise in the music of this great composer, use 18th century editions of the scores and play on authentic instruments. Their performances are quite superb, with breathtaking technique and interpretation. Recording quality is also up to the highest modern standard. I strongly recommend these inexpesive discs to all Haydn enthusiasts and very much hope that these players will go on to record all 83 quartets.
