These three concertos are ably played by Michele Boegner. The most attractive of the three is No.11 in D major, which has a Hungarian feel to it. The other two concertos are a little lightweight in comparison, but benefit from repeated hearings. It is a recording that lovers of Haydn's music should enjoy. The accompanying notes state "the listener is flabbergasted to encounter so much music in so few notes" ~ which is a way of saying "not a note is wasted". Recommended.

It is unimaginable that one could get exhausted with the 27 piano concertos of Mozart but, in that unlikely eventuality, then these three contertos will easily sate any appetite for Mozartian piano music. Had Mozart's life not been cruelly cut short then he would udoubtedly have matched the brilliance of Haydn's 104 symphonies so, given Mozart's short life, it's quite something that I can say these Haydn piano concertos do not reach the genius of Mozart's - especially the later ones. True, that may be because piano concertos were not a priority for Haydn but, whatever, it has to be said that the three concertos presented here are very much at the level of Mozart's middle period piano concertos-think numbers 14,15 and 16...and even middle level Mozart piano concertos would warrant five stars, especially when performed by the piano concerto experts, the English Chamber Orchestra, here ably supporting Michele Boegner under Jose-luis Garcia. They perform with an elegance, spirit and empathy that gives sparkle to these three Haydn gems.

Michele Boegner is an excellent pianist who recorded... 13 Jun. 2013

solo works of Haydn, Mozart and Schubert for Erato/MHS lps which I acquired in the 1970s.
Recently (2010) she recorded a Mozart sonata cycle in France now on MP3 which I have not heard, but her lp solo Mozart lp was another gem.. Most valuable now are her Mozart concerti #s 25 and 27, her Schubert Bb Sonata D960 and Three Klavierstucke D946 and her 2 CD
Haydn Sonata set. The Schubert is still not on disc and contains the best third Klavierstucke
that I have heard, including a great one by Claudio Arrau on EMI Icon.

The three Haydn concerti here were written respectively ca. 1765, 1770-1782 (two versions-the booklet notes do not indicate which version of the G Major concerto Boegner plays), and 1784. The earlier concerti are substantial works, containing unidentified, attractive cadenzas and lovely second movements (Largo cantabile and Adagio cantabile respectively).
The final and deservedly most famous D major concerto contains an Un poce adagio second movement. The three are progressively interesting. I find the finales most attractive. They
are ebullient and exciting, but the second movement of the G Major concerto is already sat least on the cusp of mature Haydn-he had already written the St. Cecilia mass
in the mid-1760s but, misleadingly, didn't write the "early" opus 20 Quartets until 1782.
Boegner plays all three infectiously and seriously. She doesn't rush, articulates clearly,
and rivals the late Malcolm Frager ( a great pianist whose Haydn recordings-among others- are still
mostly unreleased on disc). The D major concerto has received some wonderful readings on disc-Brendel/Vox, Larrocha/Decca, Haebler/Philips,but this Boegner version is fully their peer.
