Unbelievable value. Some of Haydn's greatest choral works, splendidly conducted by Harnoncourt, fine orchestral colour and detail from Concentus Musicus, Vienna with on the whole very fine soloists. Most of the works are late Haydn composed at the height of his powers when he was the most celebrated composer in the whole of Europe. If anyone doubts the genius of Haydn you should buy this set - hours and hours of glorious, life-enhancing music !!

This Warner box offers up a straightforward repackaging of Nikolaus Harnoncourt's 1990s recordings made with Concentus musicus Wein and the Arnold Schoenberg Chor for Teledec's Das Alte Werke label. Many of these are still available, and I'll highlight the original issues, but you should note that some are also available on the ongoing Warner re-release programme of the Das Alte Werk recordings with those nice looking booklet covers featuring still life art.

I'll say right away that you don't have to be religious to enjoy these works; they can be enjoyed for the marvellous music and singing throughout; there are no texts in the otherwise excellent booklet in the box, but that is rather less important here compared, say, to an opera recording. These are masterpieces and form an essential part of Haydn's life work; not to know them would be a pity for those who enjoy Haydn's symphonies, for example.

CD1 has the "Paukenmesse" and Salve Regina and was originally available as Haydn - Missa in tempore belli;Salve Regina in G minor. CD2 has the "Nelson Mass" and Te Deum and was originally available as Haydn - Nelson Mass; Te Deum.

CD3 features the "Harmoniemesse", a cantata, and another Te Deum, and was originally released as Haydn - Mass No 14; Te Deum. CD4 has the Stabat Mater with Barbara Bonney and this first came out as Haydn - Stabat Mater.

Disappointment 5 Jun. 2013
By William M. Skoog - Published on Amazon.com

This was a Haydn collection I was enthused to order, and very disappointed in its quality. The performances were heavy, somewhat romanticized, not very clean. As a conductor, I look for things that represent appropriate style and excellent clarity, and these did not come close. I returned them, which I rarely do.
