Hard to top this performance, or the recording. It's a big, bright, up close, warm, rich, bouncing, joyous event that takes all the right tempos and shows a great deal of very wise flexibility in its phrasing. The singers are fine and never detract from your enjoyment, which may be damning with faint praise, but the truth of the matter is that I am no expert judge of singing, and I found these voices suberb. Jochum is his usual charming and persuasive and very human self, which makes him a perfect match for this oratorio. A steal at the price asked. And by the way, Jochum's Haydn London symphonies on DG are spectacularly good -- if not definitive.
