5.0 out of 5 stars Classically classical 17 Aug 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
These are perfect interpretations, full of humour, wit, rythmical precision, sheer joy. Elegantly played, we can understand why Szell made of the Cleveland Orchestra one of the top orchestras of the world. Szell gives us clear access to Haydn's composing workshop, in a solar view of the architecture of these works. The sound is sharp, the sense of detail very precise. We can only cry over the fact Szell and Cleveland didn't record the second set of the London Symphonies. But there is a recording, issued by United Archives, of the 88, 92 and 104 Symphonies.
Even prefering the recordings on period instruments, these are definitive recordings for Symphonies No. 93-98; number 99 is superb, but Toscanini and Beecham's recordings, as all as Harnoncourt, make a very tough competition. Nevertheless, this is recorded silver. A must buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Magnificent 14 Aug 2009
Format:Audio CD
A treasure indeed for the Haydn Anniversary. Szell and his Clevelanders play not only with their usual perfection but also with tremendous conviction. The remastered sound is very good too. More Haydn from this team please !

I have listened to various recordings of the early London symphonies but for me this set by Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra is the one to have. These are lively and yet precise, not over-romanticised renditions. The sound is very good.

On the downside, Szell didn't record the latter set of Haydn's London symphonies so those who are looking for the best buy package of all the London symphonies would probably be best off buying either the Jochum or the Davis sets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plenty to offer for those willing to listen... 20 May 2009
By Hank Drake - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
"There is a difference between the chaste sensuality of Mozart or Haydn and the lascivious sensuality of Richard Strauss. One cannot pour chocolate sauce over asparagus." George Szell

One of the greatest misconceptions about George Szell is that, while he was able to drill orchestras into incomparable playing, his interpretations were metronomic and lacked imagination. What a load of tosh.

Szell characterization of Haydn's Early London symphonies belies the notion of him as a cold-hearted autocrat. Note the bassoon "raspberry" in the slow movement of Symphony No. 93, or his handling of the "surprise" in Symphony No. 94 (for once, it sounds startling). Szell may not indulge in aimless rubato or allow his strings to exude syrupy vibrato, but there are many subtleties to be heard - for those willing to listen. Needless to say, the playing of the Cleveland Orchestra is peerless, not merely from the standpoint of hitting the right notes at the right time and faultless intonation, but that the various choirs of the orchestra are impeccably balanced. Clearly, these players have moved far beyond merely listening to themselves to listening to each other.

While all the works on this set were recorded at Severance Hall, which can sound dry even in modern digital recordings, that doesn't seem to be a problem here. Dynamics, which were constricted, have been opened up. The strings have lost their aggressive edge and have a sweeter, more natural character - far superior to the 1991 Odyssey reissue. It says a lot about these recordings that they've hardly ever been out of the catalogue since their initial release in the late 1960s. Many collectors may well have some, or all, of these symphonies already. Thanks to the improved sonics, it's well worth replacing the earlier issues of these recordings, and a must if you don't have them already.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweeping away one's feet 24 April 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
When I first heard Szell's reading of the 94th symphony I only knew Bernstein's recording on DG. I remember that it totally swept away my feet. I had to play the second movement over and over again. As if I did'nt know the piece or as if I suddenly realized what wonderful music this was. Szell's conducting is simply sine qua non - especially in the vigorous menuets. I've since come to know Beecham's recording these symphonies but I'll stick to Szell's - mainly because he has got this marvellous orchestra with him, maybe the only orchestra in the world which can play chamber-like in tutti-parts.

5.0 out of 5 stars haydn interpretation at its best 24 Jun 2009
By Ivor E. Zetler - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
My usual benchmark interpretation of the Haydn London symphonies has been the Colin Davis set on Phillips. This Szell issue of the earlier works can easily join Davis at the top of the list. Contrary to his serious and severe reputation, Szell perfectly captures the wit, swagger and charm of Haydn's late masterpieces. Everything in these performances sounds natural and correct. An additional joy is that the sound, though lacking the warmth of the Concertgebouw sonics, is clear and detailed. An essential purchase for Haydn lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Szell's Haydn - A Real Treat 24 Oct 2009
By Mark E. Stenroos - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This release makes a number of things obvious: that George Szell was great conductor, that the Cleveland Orchestra under his bâton was a great classical orchestra...and that the world would be a MUCH better place if Haydn were played more often!

The sound on this set is superb. The music needs no apology. I listened to these discs all the way through, and then listened to them again. The discs then went into the car CD player where I listened to them a couple of additional times (and, I must say that this is perfect music to have on the car player as one makes their way down the Pacific Coast Highway in the Laguna Beach area, at least if you want to hear something besides The Beach Boys).

I'd put this set in the "grab it while it's available" category. For some reason it's the really great classical recordings that seem to have a short shelf life in today's spoiled-for-choice market, and this is a great recording by any measure.

Bravo, Haydn!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly great performances 17 Aug 2004
By W. Corey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
When I first heard George Szell and the Cleveland Orch. perform Haydn's 93rd symphony, it was like hearing a revelation. There are other very fine recordings. But, this one is superior - it conveys the composer's joy, intelligence, diligence and good nature. This is the way Haydn should be heard.
