Book Description

6 Dec 2010 Hayate X Blade Omnibus (Book 1)
The all-girls boarding school Tenchi Academy isn't just known for its quality academics - it's also known for training the top sword fighters in the country. Students in the special 'Sword Bearer' programme compete in a school-wide battle known as the Star Stealing, striving to win both money and fame. Meet Kurogane Hayate, a spunky, well-intentioned tomboy who has taken her sister's spot at Tenchi Academy with big dreams of paying off her orphanage's mountain of debt. Together with her Sword Sister Mudo Ayana, a girl who would sooner beat Hayate senseless than get to know her, the duo proceeds to ruffle more than a few feathers as they plow through the competition. "Hayate X Blade" is an action-packed romantic comedy romp, with hints of yuri. It's currently the most popular and longest running yuri manga series in Japan. Its curious blend of light girl/ girl romance with nonstop sword fighting action distinguishes it as a unique and exciting manga series that has earned a die-hard legions of fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliantly funny series 14 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
When her twin sister Nagi is hospitalized, Kurogane Hayate decides to take her place at the prestigious Tenchi Academy so that Nagi doesn't lose her scholarship. Tenchi Academy is an all-girls boarding school where, as well as normal studies, the students can take part in a special Sword Bearer program consisting of a series of two on two battles for money and fame known. Hayate intends to spend her time at the Academy as peacefully as possible but when she learns that the orphanage she and her sister grew up at is in serious debt to loan sharks she decides to take part in the Sword Bearer program so that she can pay back the money.

This first omnibus collection contains the first three volumes of the brilliantly funny `HayateXBlade' manga. `HayateXBlade' is easily one of my all-time favourite manga series as it is laugh out loud funny throughout, has some nice artwork and some good fight scenes. The series has some great characters, almost all of which are likable but my favourite has to be the somewhat eccentric Amachi Hitsugi who is possibly one of my favourite characters from a manga. The translation is very good and although the plot can be somewhat light in places, the story is always greatly entertaining.

The only real problem I have with this first omnibus it is that the Momoka/Riona storyline is somewhat more serious storyline than I would like. This is only a minor problem though and it is more than made up for by the shear quality of the rest of the story.

The omnibus also contains a short preview of the `Inukami' manga which looks quite interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars A highly entertaining series 29 Dec 2010
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
What can I say? I find myself really loving this series. Much more so than I initially expected.

If it wasn't for the fact that I found a used copy of the first volume (not the omnibus), and bought it on a whim, most likely I would have continued to overlook this series. One could be forgiven, when looking at the cover, to expect something like an Utena clone or a shojo drama along the lines of 'Maria Watches Over Us'. Even if one later finds out that this is actually a shounen series focused on sword duals, it wouldn't be to hard to not get jaded into expecting another battle/friendship series that's been getting too common lately, even if one is not a Bleach, Naruto, or a One Piece.

Instead, what I discovered was a series with the perfect balance of pure hilarity, mixed with action, packaged with interesting characters. As the back blurb describes it, this is an 'action-packed romantic comedy romp, with hints of yuri'. While they might be overstating the yuri (which is always used as a lead in to a joke), and I'm not sure about the romance, I can definitely attests to the 'action-packed' and 'comedy romp'.

However, if there's one thing to be critical about, it's the lack of Translation Notes for this omnibus release, that were included in the individual volume set (at least based on Volume 1). I don't know if this was an oversight or just a way to cut corners in cost, but this deficiency might come to be a problem for those not familiar with Japanese cultural terms or phrases (things like 'tsukkomi', 'boke', or 'owarai' come to mind).

Still, this is a series that I really enjoyed and highly recommend. I'd hate to see this fall on the wayside.
