4.0 out of 5 stars Centuries before Aeron Ard-rian ruled Keltia......., 11 Mar 2004

(REAL NAME)
As a fan of the original Keltiad trilogy focusing on Aeron, High Queen of Keltia, I was really pleased to have found a copy of the first volume of the Tales of Arthur. In the Tales of Aeron, Kennealy (or Kennealy-Morrison) had created an indepth world of magic and technology with a detailed and multi-layered society of warriors, poets, scientists and magicians. In this second trilogy she goes back into Keltia's past, alluded to in the first books, and describes a time when this society was not so ideal. A theocratic dictator now rules the star empire of the Kelts and it is up to Arthur (a revised version of the popular mythic hero and king) to defeat him.

The tale is told in first person by Arthur's best friend, Taliesin (also based on a semi-historic Welsh character) and this lends an air of subjectivity that the first books did not have. Taliesin is an all too human character with human failings, desires and neuroses, and all the more likeable and sympathetic for it. This is very clever from Kennealy's point of view, for to write it in the first person as Arthur would perhaps have stolen some of the demi-god hero status she wants to build into him.

Triumphs and tragedies are all shared by the reader and we really do get caught up in this world of opression and secrecy, and in the world of Keltic politics. However, much as I love her books and wish it were possible to actually escape there sometimes, so rich is her detail, this detail can be detrimental at times. Paragraphs can be spent on hair, clothes or even a glint in an eye. While she does have a very distinct and personal style, this can come across as self indulgent. These works are obviously very important to the author, as they are more often than not imbued with a little bit of wish-fulfilment on her part, but I feel she perhaps loses that objectivity a writer must have about his/her work to truly make it stand out.

Saying all of this however, I do really enjoy reading about Keltia and experiencing it through Kennealy-Morrison's writing and her characters more often than not spring to life in front of you. If you enjoyed Dune or even Lord of the Rings, the scope of Kennealy-Morrison's creation should appeal to you.
