Although I'm a huge fan of early 70s Neil Young, I'd always been under the impression (from other reviews etc) that the quality of his albums dropped off in the 80s, so had avoided anything after the Live Rust era.
I recently heard a bit of Hawks and Doves by chance and instantly knew I needed to have it in my collection.

Its a short album, only 9 songs long and is split distinctly between what would have been side 1 and side 2 on a vinyl lp.
Side 1 - slow, simple melody acoustic songs like Neil does best. My favourite being 'Lost in Space' - even with some slightly odd lyrics.
Side 2 - up tempo, country tinged singalong songs the likes of 'Union Man'. These songs seem pretty political about the state of the US in the early 80s but I don't know much about that, I just know they've got great hooks!

Highly recommended.

This is really worth getting hold of - the first side is all acoustic tunes, some dating as far back as the mid-1970's, and they're all crackers - 'Little Wing' and 'Captain Kennedy' are two of the great unknown Neil Young songs. The country stuff of the second side is less powerful, but still contain some interesting and funny things. Definitely worth checking out.

Neil Young at his very best. This mid-period album is full of really great songs, especually Captain Kennedy and Little Wing. The sort of Album that when it gets to the end you really don't know what to follow it with, so you replay it.Catherine's Story

You're either a Neil Young Fan or you're not. If you're not, start somewhere else - this was the beginning of Neil's creative lull; you should begin with any one of Harvest, Tonight's The Night, On The Beach, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Rust Never Sleeps, Comes A Time, After The Goldrush or Zuma. Don't Read Any Further!

But if you're a Neil fan already, then you're gonna have to buy this at some point. The layout of the album is thusly: the first side is acoustic stuff amd pretty typical Neil. Little Wing, Captain Kennedy and The Old Homestead are worth your time though, but Lost In Space is one of the worst things anyone has ever recorded ever. The second side is taken from the sessions for the album and is straight up Country Rock - in this respect, the album is similarly structured to American Stars N' Bars, and whilst the second half doesn't contain an epic like Hurricane, the final two tracks here, Comin' Apart At Every Nail and Hawks And Doves are top quality.

In summation, worth a pop if you've got the albums I mentioned above, but hardly essential Neil.

I had avoided this album because so many people had written it off at the time and subsequently, what are they on?

I picked this up recently and by cricky if this is not the best acoustic album I have heard from Neil Young. The album positively hums with atmosphere; the album contains some of in my opinion Neil Young's best acoustic songs. 'Little Wing' and 'The Old Homestead' from the aborted 1975 'Homegrown' project sound just as good as the newer songs such as 'Hawks and Doves'

I had never heard this album before, but have been a fan for years and couldn't wait for its release.
The first time i opened up the case and put on the cd i was thinking wow! this is SO good. Little Wing and The Old Homestead are truly great Neil Young tracks. But then it all gets a little too country for me and the lyrical content wains slightly. Don't get me wrong, on their own, tracks like Capt. Kennedy and Union Man are great, but on the album they seem to interrupt the flow and feel that was set at the beginning. After such a great start its a bit of a let down, but i still rate it at 4 stars because in my mind, even when Neils' writing is average he still has that special quality to his voice and playing that makes him stand out from the rest. Worth waiting for. Definately. It'll grow on you. It has me.
