5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing account of a complex figure, 23 Oct 2002
This is a beautifully crafted study of a fascinating person. There are lots of stories of mad Victorian vicars but this book offers a readable account of a figure who reveals some of the essence of his age. Hawker had a love/hate relationship with the isolation of his parish; he was paternalistic yet in some ways anti-establishment.

For anyone interested in people such as William Morris, Ruskin or Wordsworth, I would really recommend this book as a thought-provoking study of one with strong sympathy for the pre-industrial, heightened awareness of nature, and great practical compassion for those around him.
