Theres plenty to like about this intriguing album . The electronics and resulting harmonies mesh well with the artist's fine singing voice. Theres one or two quieter noodling moments when she loses me but on the whole a thumbs up However, I would recommend buying direct from Stone Tape if you have the choice. Although I was able to play the album on a cd player, I was unable to do so on my pc and consequently unable to transfer it to my walkman. Had I bought it direct from Stone Tape it would have come with a download(seemingly not offered with the Amazon purchase)

If you insist on pigeon-holing this highly original album, then perhaps it could be described as alternative-folk. 'Hawk to the Hunting Gone' is the debut album from You are Wolf, the solo project of composer and vocalist Kerry Andrew. With the theme of birds in British folklore, it's a mixture of traditional folk songs, original compositions and a couple of pop songs all given an adventurous treatment. Beatboxing and vocal percussion are often used to provide the rhythmic background to Andrew's clear vocals with just the right amount of instrumentation and electronica. It's hard to pick a stand-out track since each is a gem in its own right. However special mention must be made of 'Swansong', a brilliant version of the traditional song 'Molly Bawn', 'Doves', a clever version of the Prince song 'When Doves Cry'and Andrew's own composition the haunting 'Oh Ruin'. In contrast to some of the other tracks' busy arrangements, 'The Buzzard's Heart' features a lone voice with a gorgeous string accompaniment and is a musical interpretation of Robin Robertson's poem 'Answers'. All in all it's a fantastic collection of songs performed in an original highly listenable way.

Magic or sorcery is an attempt to understand, experience and influence the world using rituals, symbols, actions, gestures and language, listen to this, and run like a wolf.
