Synopsis

One of TV's longest-running crime dramas (only Law and Order would surpass its record-setting 12-year run), the 1970s television series Hawaii Five-O captivated audiences with its smart and stylish take on the standard policier formula. Filmed entirely on the Hawaiian archipelago, the action-packed series followed the crime-fighting adventures of an elite state-police squad anchored by quintessential tough guy Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord) and his detective team of Danny 'Danno' Williams (James MacArthur), Chin Ho Kelly (Kam Fong), and Kono Kalakaua (Zulu). Almost singlehandedly rewriting the book on police dramas, the series distinguished itself with intricate plotting, inventive cinematography, exotically beautiful locations, and, of course, an indelible theme song and timeless catchphrase ('book 'em, Danno!'). The iconic show's fifth series is presented here in its entirety.

The 1972-73 season saw Hawaii Five-0 mature into a very entertaining proposition. This is the season that many consider the show to be truly at its peak. Finishing third in television ratings Stateside , 5-0 was essential and often unmissable viewing. Here we have 24 fifty minute episodes with guest stars including, William Shatner (Star Trek); Erik Estrada (Chips) and Ricardo Montalban (Fantasy Island). The show is as before, with Jack Lord playing detective Steve Mcgarrett who continues to lead the special elite police unit we affectionately refer to as "Five-0". The only cast change in this season sees Al Harrington introduced as Ben Kokua - sadly this means we no longer get to see the wonderful casting credit of "Zulu as Kono", as it is Zulu that Harrington replaces.
There are some really priceless episodes contained within this boxset and one of those gems is the inclusion of the series' only ever three part story - collectively known as "The Vashon Trilogy" - this is the opus of all five-0 storytelling, seeing McGarrett pitting wits against the island's biggest instigators of organised crime, the Vashon family! Part one focuses on the son, part 2, the father and part three, the patriarch, or grandfather to you and I. For me, the only episode really out of place in this season (and indeed the show itself), is "Chain of Events", which sees the murder of a sexual health worker and a story involving STD's! As I say, an episode I consider to be somewhat out of place when compared to the usual and often outlandish stories from other episodes.

The re-mastering of these shows has often been cause for debate - I must admit, in this respect, some are very good, some are also lacking.

I have a large collection of DVDs from the 1970s, mostly classic British programmes such as The Sweeney, Upstairs Downstairs, When The Boat Comes In etc but am more wary about American series, only owning the excellent Columbo, series 1 - 8. After reading up on Hawaii Five-0 I decided to wait and buy the highly regarded Season Five. It was worth the wait.
This is a tight, pacy, cop show made with consummate professionalism by cast and crew which combines escapism with a focus on various serious crime issues.
A lot of modern TV is superficially glossy but shoddy, unprincipled and often made to a particular 'agenda'. It also tends to wallow in dreary, phoney emotionalism. The priorities of the makers of this, admittedly somewhat dated programme, were clearly entertainment, quality and professionalism.

The original Hawaii Five-O series was screened on British TV between 1968 - 1980. A total of 284 x 60 minute episodes were made, all made on location in Hawaii. Other popular detective series made in Hawaii include Hawaiian Eye (1959 - 1963: 134 x 60min episodes), Magnum P.I. (1980 - 1988: 164 x 48min episodes). The original series has been remade (as Hawaii Five-O) and screened from 2010 onwards. There have been 118 x42min new episodes up until 2015. James MacArthur, who played ‘Danno” Danny Williams, Steve McGarrett’s second in command, made a cameo appearance in the Hawaii Five-O TV movie as Governor Dan Williams, the roll previously played by Richard Denning.

These TV detective series span almost 60 years but the series I remember most of all is the original Hawaii Five-O with Jack Lord as Steve McGarrett, head of Five-O. I recall the ingenious plots and the fact that all the Five-O team wore suits and were immaculately dressed most of the time despite the hot and humid tropical environment of Hawaii. The remade series is probably more true to life in terms of dress sense but what the original series had was style, and style by the bucketful.

Try as I may, I cannot get the original cast out of my mind when watching the remake series. Worse still are the new plots which seem to me too ‘generic’ for my taste. I mean by this that I have seen similar plots in other cop shows. Perhaps the writers of Hawaii Five-O have run out of ideas and look for interesting storylines elsewhere.

Whether the remake series will be as memorable or as enduring as the original series is open to debate but at the time of this review the original series has notched up more than double the number of episodes of the remake.

I remember the original Five-O with fondness and it is my intention to collect the entire series on DVD. I only need series 4 to complete my collection.

The fifth is the best of the Hawaii Five-O series I've seen so far. A close second comes the fourth. They simply don't make them like this anymore. I guess they'll be saying the same thing about NCIS in 40 years. That's another good series. I'm looking forward to the 6th Hawaii Five-O series being released on DVD in September. As it's all been said before I'll say no more. But it is true, the best really does get better.
