Amazon Review

Age 0-3

All the family enjoy a picnic in the park--especially when they are joined by some rather unexpected guests--in this chunky, sturdy board book that recreates one of life's little pleasures in a simple, familiar and easy to understand way.--Sian Richards. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

Welcome new editions of Sarah Garland's classic series that looks at every aspect of family life and will appeal to toddlers. (Nursery World )

There is much to wonder in the everyday lives of children, which is captured wonderfully by Sarah Garland. Well illustrated and represent very real families in their busy noisy, muddled but lovelable and endearing lives. The simple sentences and familiar phrases correlate directly with the text making them ideal reading for emergent readers. (EYE )

The brief text on every page compliments the realistic illustrations wonderfully. Humour and realism is abundant on every page. (Nursery Education )

Humour and realism is abundant on every page. (Nursery Education )

Another in the reissued series of Sarah Garland's pre-school books. The text is perfect for toddlers, with a short sentence on each page and the illustrations provide added interest and humour. (www.writeaway.org.uk )

Format:Board book
Frazzled but attractive mother in highly recognizable, socks everywhere sort of house, sets off to the park with small girl plus toddler. Lots of detail in their simple walk makes for lots of conversation with children as you read and look. When they arrive at the park, they have a picnic...and a small adventure in which small children delight. Has been a favourite of our family through three children and I would quite happily read it again to any grandchildren that turned up.

5.0 out of 5 stars An English Picnic! 7 Aug 2010

This is an English picnic, complete with coats, rain and a gale force wind! In all seriousness though, this is Sarah Garland excelling at what she does best. Taking real life and making it joyous and understandable for small children. So what if there's a drizzle? Go to the park and feed the ducks! Love her books.

5.0 out of 5 stars A walk in the park 15 Feb 2013
By Nicola Hardy TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
As with the other titles in Sarah Garland's 'Coming and Going' series for toddlers, 'Having a Picnic' depicts a fairly ordinary scene from family life. Mum decides to take her two young children and the dog to the park for a picnic. The weather is blustery, but they manage to have a good time, even though the ducks steal some of their food!

As a parent, the thing I love most about Sarah Garland's books are the illustrations - we see a mother who isn't always neatly dressed, who often looks tired and needs frequent cups of tea, but she clearly loves her children and they are shown here muddling on together and having a great time. The text in the books is fairly undemanding - it really just describes a sequence of events - but the illustrations give plenty to discuss, and my daughter loves describing what's going on in each picture. Buyers may like to note that Dad does not make an appearance in this book, so the tale may not suit single fathers.

If you're looking for a realistic portrayal of a slice of family life to share with your toddler, then this tale comes highly recommended.

This review refers to the hardback edition of 'Having a Picnic' published by Frances Lincoln Children's Books in 2009.
