Book Description

7 July 2005

Meet the Dobsons and the Jamiesons: two ordinary families on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

Joe Dobson left his wife and kids when his young girlfriend Nina discovered she was pregnant. Now he feels like a cliche and Nina feels like a drudge, swapping her wild nights out with friends for mild nights in wiping baby sick off the carpet. So when Joe announces that he's booked a week's luxury holiday in Italy, Nina is thrilled - until she realises Joe's kids Saul and Tabitha are coming along for the ride.

Meanwhile Guy Jamieson is sure this will be his last family holiday; he plans to leave his wife Alice on his return. Guy is a high-powered advertising director, and Alice - with her elasticated skirts, inedible mince suppers and unshaven legs - just doesn't fit his image. But Alice has a secret plan of her own: to have another baby...

Funny, smart and refreshingly honest, HAVING A LOVELY TIME is all about infidelity, jealousy, resentment, recriminations and, just occasionally, love.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT READ 15 Mar 2005
By Janet
I enjoy Jenny Eclair as a Stand-Up and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read it, on holiday, in a couple of days where normally I take about three weeks to read a book! My Partner, who usually sticks to books by male Authors, read it as well and thoroughly enjoyed it too. Everday life, and emotions, feature in this book, and the characters are believable. We are both now looking to read Jenny's other book

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait 7 Jan 2005
After the brilliance of Camberwell Beauty, I eagerly awaited Jenny Eclair's next novel and haven't been disappointed. All the darkness and nastiness is still there and the ascerbic wit shines through. Hilairious. I loved it and would recommend it to anyone who had a sense of humour and likes their novels with a touch of bitterness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Having a great read 23 Feb 2005
This is a fantastic read...... I laughed so much it hurt.
Because of the language, I had doubts lending it my mum, but guess what?..... she loved it! I have now ordered Camberwell Beauty. Well done to the author, can't wait for the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars SOOOO funny! 19 Feb 2011
I'm not really a big Jenny Eclair fan as far as her TV work goes, so was pleasantly surprised at this book and her other book Camberwell Beauty. They are both SOOOOOOOO funny and addictive, I couldn't put this down. Brilliant read. I wish she would write some more!

5.0 out of 5 stars crude but FAB! 15 Mar 2009
Read this after reading Jenny's other book. Loved it even more. It's crude, vile & sick but you cannot stop reading. The characters are loathesome but you can't wait to find out more. Just shows you that the 'perfect family with the perfect kids' down the road might not be what they seem.

I kept laughing out loud (much to my husband's annoyance) & was so disappointed when it ended!

PS I never laugh out loud at books...but this one had me ROARING!

5.0 out of 5 stars I had a fabulous time! 25 April 2006
I really did, reading this book made me laugh and cry. Jenny Eclair has really rounded the characters out nicely and you really feel for the underdogs in the book.

I loved Camberwell Beauty too - and I seriously hope Jenny has another book in her somewhere!

I was looking for a book to make me laugh whilst on holiday, and this one sure did that! The characters were so 'real' and I felt as if I knew them all, and I couldn't put the thing down! It is a book that I fell into for 2 full days! Cant wait for more from Jenny Eclair! Definately recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Having A lovely Time
This is the second Jenny Eclair book I have read and enjoyed both of them. As well as being funny they have a darker side and also reflect life better than a lot of novels

4.0 out of 5 stars Nowhere to hide, time to decide, whose side...
Jenny Éclair reminds me of a robin. Head on one side, bright beady eyes darting around, taking everything in, singing away to establish herself, she doesn't miss a trick. Read more
