4.0 out of 5 stars A good start 26 Nov 2013

Not a bad start at all, it managed to keep me reading although I was always waiting for something to happen and by the time it did it was finished - hopefully this will be rectified in the next book.

1.0 out of 5 stars what a waste of money! 24 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Everybody who loves fantasy will be utterly disappointed by this story - if you can call it that. No proper Storyline, the whole "thing" reads as if it's just a chapter and when it get's slightly interesting, then the book is finished. So whatever you do AVOID this book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Saves the big reveal for the end and it works! 16 Aug 2013

(Disclaimer: I received one or more of the products mentioned below for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.)

When it comes to fantasy fiction I'm not averse to picking up lighter, swifter reads aimed at the teen set. I love anything strange and different! Haven: A Stranger Magic is a fantasy fiction novella that introduces us to thirteen-year-old Sam, a boy so completely average he feels invisible and useless. However, things change for Sam when he begins having strange nightmares and a mysterious stranger appears (and disappears) in the street outside his home. Now Sam is about to find out that he's far from average.

I wasn't expecting to really like a book with a teen male protagonist--not really my preferred POV, for obvious reasons--but this book sucked me in. It's fast-paced but doesn't rush you into the magic part of things; in fact, the biggest magic "reveal" doesn't happen until the very end of the book. I think one of the trickiest parts of writing about magic is steadily dosing your audience without dragging your feet or rushing them too quickly, and this book strikes the right balance between "hmm, things are getting weird" and "whoa, magic!".

The only thing that really interrupted the narrative (for me) was the way characters are described; the book is written in the third person but mostly comes from Sam's POV, and most teenage boys I know aren't going to note, in detail, the outfit an older sister is wearing or the haircut of a friend. That little rumple aside, the story flows by really quickly until the end. If you don't like spoilers, I recommend staying away from the Goodreads page for this book because it has what I consider an end spoiler in the description. Suffice it to say, saving the big reveal for the end and then cutting it off with a cliffhanger makes the story much more satisfying and leaves you wanting the next installment in the series so you can find out what will happen to Sam (and what those weird dreams mean).

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced novel with unexpected twists and mysteries 5 Jun 2013

I have a vivid imagination when reading books so this one got me really excited. Even the first few pages were so fast-paced that my heart raced while Sam was running through the forest! The relief was temporary when he woke up but I knew that something was up because he was having a recurring dream! That alone drove me to read through the book, perusing every detail just to uncover what it was that he was constantly dreaming about!

Quite an excellent book with a whole lot of twists and mysteries that drive me to turn the pages until I reached the end! No spoiler here ;) Read the book for yourself as I won't be revealing any details but you have to watch out for unexpected twists! Warning: this book can be addicting. I was not able to put it down until I reached the very end. I'm fond of predicting endings but I wasn't able to predict this one correctly. Certainly a must-read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely love this one!!! 5 Jun 2013

Something strange awaits outside. As Sam dreams he's running from something that is dark and unseen. He hears his sister Sarah, but doesn't see her anywhere around.

Strange things are happening and neither child seems to understand what's going on.

They argue constantly, like most siblings do.

When Sam wakes, from the dream, or was it really a dream, he's soaked and his sister thinks he's ran a marathon from how drenched he is. Was it really a dream? Was it something of the unexplained?

I have to say that I honestly recommend this book for anyone that loves the Harry Potter series as this just may be another wonderful series to make with it. You gotta read this one. I would also recommend this for preteens and maybe even younger teens. I'm 34 and love the book myself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved It! 17 Sep 2013

Wow.....Just Wow!!!
As I started this book I was drawn into it like fire with oxygen, I needed to keep turning the pages.
Sam is that kind of character that you think he's just going to be another annoying, whiny teenager, but he's so much more. I'm not saying that he doesn't whine or act like a total jerk, because he does.....he just actually seems to care about his actions.
When he fights with his mom he feels really awful....I mean CLEAN YOUR ROOM awful. That alone made his character so much more.
Then you have the spiders....GOD I hate spiders. These spiders start at Sam's house and then further present themselves in the cave.
A cave in itself is freaking creepy. But, added more WHOLLY BOOGERS to the effect with the mysterious side cavern.
I for one wouldn't be moving closer to the thing. I would be saying...."Wholly Boogers", turn tail and run!
On the other hand....Sam's sister is kinda cool. I mean she is the typical older sister, but her ability with water....NICE!
I love the alley scene....I too have at times wished my anger could do things like that.
As you read this story you get a great feeling for who the family is.....well so you think.
Dad died (NO photos are around), Mom works hard, both kids at each others throats, like a true brother/sister. Just with this family they have weird strangers watching them.....
Or are they really weird strangers??????
Right when you think you'll see what the big picture is....
Cliff-Hanger!!!
Wonderful job Mr. Akers. I currently am trying very hard not to guess what's coming in the next book.....If you could by chance.....
WRITE IT FAST :)

3.0 out of 5 stars Slow to Start 5 April 2014
By Vicki Ashley - Published on Amazon.com

The Book was very slow to start, you knew something was different about the family but not sure what. It's not too the end that things are coming together and right when things get interesting the book ends. Guess that helps with the sales of the next book of the series.
